love infographics! I was about to sell my macbook air 13'' 2011 to get a new Pro. But to get the thinnest one (retina... which does not impress me) I must pay almost twice as a macbook air. Therefore, not worth it.

Great info graphic! However to me the new MBP is an upgrade to AIR not to a pro-line. Between the lack of available TB devices and apps that work well with the upgraded display, I dont see the benefits of the new portable. I think in a year or so this maybe a more usable machine... Also I still use optical a lot when dealing with clients and it's a huge PITA to have to carry an external drive when you are looking for an all in one replacement.
I don't get the obsession with pixel density. It's just a differentiating feature so they put a bunch of marketing around it. Now if they would update the OS as the same time to deal with a variety of densities I'd be more excited. browse this page on a variety of screens and I think you will notice that pixel density is not really that big a deal when it comes to using the web. Other apps that are specifically designed for HD will work better, but I'm thinking all the apps should just work better without an update. It's really kinda silly.
Good infographic. The only thing they left out was that the high resolution screen will be imperceptible for damn near most people. Sure, the display looks better due to the improved color reproduction, but it won't be due to the increased PPI (at least not at a normal working distance of 12-14 inches).
I second that. The difference is instantly noticeable. There is a "magazine like" crispness that makes it look incredibly sharp and detailed. Being able to open large photos and view them at such a high resolution is quite surreal.
I've worked installing and calibrating home theatre displays for years. Apart from the high ppi screens on smartphones and the iPad3, I've seriously never seen a better quality LCD.
I can't wait for stand alone monitors and video formats to catch up (and for the next 4K format to supersede 1080p). Computers and tablets have now overtaken what we call "HD", so it's only natural that desktop monitors and TVs will be next. Bring on the high ppi/UHDTV 'resolution revolution' :)
Yes I agree on that point - I really wish that apple displays boasted the same ppi - to me a 15" high density display is not nearly as useful as a 30" display with the same resolution. If apple made a cinema display that's 27-32" and at least 6400 by 3600 pixels then I'd get excited. This would be a definite improvement in my workflow. Having a high-density laptop screen doesn't seem nearly as useful since you're still stuck to 15". I think what would be cooler is if they made the retina display more like Cintiq (www.wacom.com/en/products/~/link.aspx?_id=D6274FFC...)
Overpriced by at least 1k... $1400 im in, otherwise shortly there will be a proliferation of options, most below $800 that will meet 95% of 95% of the users needs. The apple tax is wearing thin.
Understood, not bashing Apple, Im just a tech enthusiast that likes to get the best bang for the buck. Allows me trade and exchange and use allot of different technology. For the $399 I paid for the 32 gig asus tf300 its hard to beat. Liked it so much I sold my iPad 2 and actually went cash flow positive on the deal. The snapin charging keyboard works much better than i had anticipated. When Apple comes out with a macbook air thats a similar concept with a touch screen allowing ios and osx options on the fly for a reasonable price i will reconsider. It all comes down to functionality and bang for for the buck. Its the latter APPLE is not delivering on.
The "bang for the buck" approach is my bottom line. I always bought Macs when I could but the last thing I can afford now is a Mac. My Mac Pro was upgraded I could manage and when it got to a point that another video card wouldn't fly I opted out of Macs when RAM would cost as much as a completely new PC. Sorry, folks. A PC is considered at least disposable at the prices are expected for Macs. Still, I have my old PowerBook, a MacProBook, a Mac Pro (desktop), and an old Sawtooth. All of these still can function but....well....I use the desktop PC more than the MBP.
