Do you have an old laptop? I was thinking of getting a new one, but instead I opted for upgrading the hard drive and getting a refurbished ipad 2 (check the online apple store, they still have them). The downside of the ipad for me is that there is no MS Office, and I'd need to get and learn the iWork for iOS products, but I think I can also use google docs. Apart from work and related tasks, I mainly use my laptop for web browsing and casual games, which certainly I can use on the ipad.
The fact that you're thinking of getting a keyboard dock tells me that a laptop might be better for you. If you're thinking of replacing your laptop tasks completely with an iPad, I say you should go all the way with that, and not use an external keyboard. Otherwise, that would defeat the portability of the iPad. The iPad can do a lot of laptop tasks, but that's actually stretching it. The iPad CAN, but the laptop can still do it more efficiently & comfortably. So if weight & portability is REALLY an issue, then iPad is the way to go, but then you have to be comfortable with the onscreen keyboard to make it worth it. Bringing a keyboard, puts your whole package very close to the portability of an 11-inch MacBook Air... if so, then you might be better off with the Air.
I'm struggling with the same issue you are. Take a look at this

Because of things like this, I will be getting an iPad soon.
And also realize that an Apple laptop is going to be north of $1200. Do you have an iPhone? Is your current laptop busted or just old? I am still "using" a Toshiba Satellite from 2007 just for reference on what can still "do the job" unless you want to do video editing and the like.
