Reading books on e-Ink screens is great. Magazines... not so much so. I have seen magazines in action on the Nook Color and that worked well, but e-Ink and photo-heavy documents do not make for a real pleasant combo. I would recommend you go to your local B&N and do some comparison there before making the decision. Even though the software is different between the Nook and Kindle devices, you can at least get an idea what it is like reading the two formats on the different screens. If you are a heavy reader of both magazines and books, it may be worth the money to buy both devices.
As long as your eyes aren't bothered by staring at backlit screens for hours on end, you should be fine reading books on it. Some people are sensitive to it, but others aren't. Only experience can really answer the question for you definitively.
Well, I haven't seen it on a Kindle, but I have tried to read PDFs on my Nook and it has made it clear that trying to read any content that is page layout based on a small screen just isn't worth the effort. With books, the visual layout is irrelevant, so it is easy to reflow it to any size. With a designed layout, though, in order to maintain the integrity of the publication, you end up having to zoom in and move the page all around to get to every part of it and that is a dreadful experience on e-Ink, which has a relatively low response time. When I have PDFs to read, unless it is just text that can be reflowed with no problem, I just get out my laptop or netbook instead.
I agree with groovechicken on this one... Though I imagine magazines would have better formatting controls than regular PDFs, the are very image-heavy and you would only be getting half the goodness (or less, honestly) by using an e-ink display. So, if you're already used to the harsher display of an LCD, and you really just want to selection, I'd go for the Kindle Fire.
That said, if you can afford to get both Kindles, why are you looking at the Kindle keyboard as opposed to the Kindle Touch or even the $79 "lighter, smaller, faster" Kindle (without the touch capabilities)?

for reading books the e-ink Kindles are the way to go but as for reading magazines a 7 inch screen is way too small. I think the reason why the iPad has a 9.7 inch screen is because Steve Jobs envisioned a future where people will read magazines on their tablets and wanted to save the newspaper and magazine industry.
