Kind of silly, but the used gadget store a block from my house (yes, I'm that lucky) had one for very cheap and I couldn't resist buying it.

Still think it's one of the best BlackBerrys RIM ever put out, I especially love the roomy keyboard. Won't be using it as my primary phone, but I did load it up with Gmail, Google Voice (mainly for SMS), Twitter, and AIM, and it's been really nice to have for banging out messages and emails when I'm running around town. Other advantage of carrying two phones: multitasking. Being able to compose an email while looking at my calendar or a webpage is surprisingly useful.

Good luck with the space heater.

Bonus feature to watch out for after a couple of months of heavy use: Automatic battery ejection.

Other advantage to carrying multiple phones: multiple carriers. You never know when you're going to be a spot with reception for one carrier but not the other.

I agree. At one point I had phones on all 4 at the same time. Currently, I just have two AT&T and one on Verizon. It seems to work out pretty well for me.

I know, I've been pondering carrying around both my Nexus S and Palm Pre+

Hah, I wouldn't be surprised to see a groundswell of support forming around your quaint retro gadget notion Peter. Three-day battery life, an ample-sized physical keyboard and WiFi... pretty sweet second phone.

Of course does that mean Peter rocks out with two Sims? It must be nice to live the live of luxury :p

Too bad BBs are pretty useless without BIS/BES

The rumor mill is churning that they are making another BB with that exact design with the track pad and the screen is touch and a physical keyboard. I'm excited for this.

I understand the handiness/silliness of having 2 gadgets.. I have an iPad which is nice when on a relaxing trip, iPod Touch which is slim and fits in a wallet... Then I have my htc EVO 4G which I "bang" on or use as a wifi hotspot for the above mentioned +laptop. Just recently on a family trip to palm springs I brought all of those gadgets for the kids as well as a CR-48 which came in handy for planning out hotels, dinner, while driving around. (My wife was driving and the kids were playing on the iOS devices). Overall the iOS devices are great for the kids for games, netflix, etc.. The android and chrome are great for anything else but the games & netflix, go figure.

Agree. Still have one that I use when I travel internationally (BB data plans vastly cheaper when roaming than other smartphone plans). The thing is rock solid and built like a tank.

Maybe I drop my phones too often.

You know, this is one of the things about Apple products - I *know* they're comparatively incapable of taking punishment, so I take steps even before purchase to buy additional protection for them. For other handsets I don't tend to bother. It's something that's been conditioned into me from buying Apple products over the years.

I did change my habits a bit with the increase of large-glass-area phones in my inventory but after a while, I realised that apart from the iPhone, you couldn't really get really nice 'use-through' cases and in any case, these other phones didn't need the level of protection an iPhone does in order to stay working.

After a couple of drops though, the 9000 was quite reliably ejecting the back case and sometimes the battery in various situations. The keyboard is justifiably a highlight and I never had problems with the physical trackball (see comments re Apple Mighty Mouse for this as well) but the heat that built up during conversations and the battery issue caused me to retire it for good - that was also if I'm not mistaken my last Blackberry - although I might be persuaded to consider a Torch update in the near future.

I haven't had the battery actually pop out, but because of the button at the bottom of the phone it is ridiculously easy to accidentally pop off the battery cover.

I switched from an iPhone 3GS to a 9000 and am loving the change. Was tired of the iPhone after three years of having one (original > 3GS). Only problem is the limited application memory! Will definitely be upgrading to one of the BlackBerry devices RIM releases this year, either Bold Touch or the Monaco/Monza (full touch screen).
