Just installed Snow Leopard on my 2006 core duo MBP with 1GB ram. All is well, however SL says my battery needs to be serviced. It irks me.
Honestly, a new battery is a really good investment especially if you're planning on keeping the laptop for another 2ish years. I'm planning on getting a new MBP when I graduate and had the expendable capital to invest in a new battery (off amazon).
Came with a 2yr warranty and works better than the original. There are also extra capacity battery replacements that have a good track record.
