Just got this today...

Got it for my dad during the Black Friday deals... was $149 from Best Buy.

First impressions: It is very thin... on the sides at least. It is very thin on each side, but bulges towards the middle in the back. It has a single mini USB port on the bottom along with a (what is now green, I do not know if it changes colors) LED next to it. Am currently downloading the 1.9GB (!!!!) map update using the TomTom HOME Application, which is conveniently stored on the unit's 2GB flash memory for you to use to install, which takes the fuss of having to find the app on TomTom's website out. (I downloaded from the website anyway though...)

Compared to my Garmin 765T, the screen definitely is bigger with the 540S (as the 765T is only 4.3" vs the 540's 5"). Am going to let it update and will report back with my findings! Hope this helps anyone looking at this item! (This is my first time trying a TomTom GPS, will be interesting to see how this device fares versus my Garmin)

Well after using it for a day I've found the following:

- The EasyPort mounting system works very well, although the 3 spring loaded clips that "latch" onto the mount are not as strong as I thought, but hold the GPS well enough.
- The screen looks as if it has the same resolution as my Garmin, but I mean, people buy this GPS for the big screen so things inherently are bigger.
- The TomTom is more customizable - from voices to map colors to startup/shutdown images to voices, is very customizeable... trouble is... with only 2GB of space, of which ~1.6GB is used by the map... leaves little space for much customizations (voices can take up quite a bit of space especially if its a computer voice)
- TomTom's interface is more basic, and the map while driving does not update as often as the Garmin. I assume this is because (I believe) the TomTom runs on Java, whereas the Garmin runs off WindowsCE.

All in all, it is still a good GPS for basic navigation :)
