It Just Won't Die!!!

My iPod has been fine for years now and it's kind of making me mad. I really want to get an ipod touch but since this thing is still kickin' there is no reason for me to buy one. Has anyone else had this luck with it.

Yup, this 5G is just like the Honda Civic of iPods to date, you just can't kill this thing. I've had a 4G and 4G photo die out within 1-2 yrs before and was expecting this 5G to follow suit, but no. A touch would be nice, but I'll go ahead and save the few hundred as long as I can especially in this economy. I think I have enough video content to keep me going between my 4:3 5G and slingbox on my phone.

Same here. I carry mine with me every day. It's been dropped more times than I can count. It's been through rainstorms. I've spilled coffee on it. Still works great. I suspect black magic.

Haha it's a great piece of hardware.

LOL, my '98 Honda Civic never broke down and my wife finally made me trade it in this summer for newer car. And an update on my 5G iPod that wouldn't die after 4+ years, I finally broke down about a year ago and bought an iPod touch and then an iPad so my 5G has been retired.

Amen to all of ya, I am holding off on an iTouch for the same reason. This version is build like a brick shit house. I guess after 5 iterations of the iPod they build a tank of a player.

for me, the closest thing to broken/malfunction is turning it off. holding the play button down takes multiple tries once in awhile. besides that, it works like new still. had it since it first came out.

This is also the most difficulty I've had with mine. Fortunately the 2G i pawned off on my gf died, so I gave her my 5g and got the touch. :)

I absolutely agree - I've had mine for two and a half years now, it's still going absolutely brilliantly, it's driving me mad! Mine's been through every weather condition under the sun, and has had my daughter spell the entire contents of her drinky cup all over it... and it's still awesome. I kinda want a Touch, but I'm pretty sure I'll get an iPhone when my current contract ends, so... :D

same here, I couldn't wait any longer, i broke down and bought an iPhone last year, my iPod is still alive and kicking, though it hardly gets used, its waiting around to be a backup when i need it.

Your experience is the same as mine.

I had a poor experience with the 4G (had to get a replacement and the replacement died one week out of warranty). I gave Apple another chance and the 5G has been a great device. It doesn't get as much use as it used to since I mainly use iPhone now, but every time I plug it into a dock to play some times it starts right up.

Yeah my 5th-gen just won't quit. I've been rocking it since it was initially released. I bought mine the first week they were available which happened to coincide nicely with the death of the battery on my 3rd-gen. I kinda want mine to die so I have a reason to get the Zune HD :P

Actually, I've never had any ipod die. I just donate old ones to family and friends who aren't as geeky, and use the newer ones. Currently I use the 5th gen in my explorer, and the iPhone 3GS as my primary PMP.

Another story of woe here. I've been patiently waiting for this thing to die for over a year or more so that I can get an iPod touch. No luck. I think the hard clear case I have for it also does its job too well :-)

I run this player for about 10 hours a day. It goes between home and work. Battery life remains almost as good as it was when it was brand new. The player itself is, as stated above, solid and working just as good as new.

I will be buying a new Classic to replace it this fall, as my music collection has finally outgrown the hard drive. Otherwise, there's no reason this thing wouldn't be my go-to music player for years to come. A great iPod!

Haha true! I've had my 5th gen iPod video for about 4 years now and it still runs smooth. I used it everyday and I've dropped it several times by now. It's magic..what can you say!

Last summer someone broke into my car by breaking the window. Nothing was visible in the car but I had my Garmin GPS and my iPod 5.5G both hidden in compartments. The funny thing is the thief stole my GPS but not my iPod! So I had to buy a new GPS but I'm still stuck with this thing and I feel too guilty to buy a new MP3 player.

yes this iPod is that device which never wants to quit! I have taken it totally apart and back together again and stilll works -- Though I would like this device to die, I have noticed that basically this is the last "great" ipod device!

Drop it so many times, just stopped worrying about it now, and that's not my style. I had rubber case for first year, ditched that and just went for a skin.

This thing is a tank. I won't be upgrading to the Touch until it has more storage than the new iPod Classics and plays nice with more formats....

Yeah i have had mine for 4 years now, and its just starting to fall apart now. the hard drive is a little sluggush and my computer says its corrupted. but almost all songs work. i have dropped it many times and it sitll works good though. but now the audio jack is starting to fail, it only comes in my left ear now...time to upgrade maybe. its okayh, i got my money's worth.

If you want to break your ipod then place a magnet on it overnight. I had my bluetooth car kit sitting on top of my ipod and the next day the harddrive was clicking and clunking and the ipod had a sad face on it
I now have a new Nano which is fantastic, but I do miss the space on my old 60GB ipod

Had this ipod for about 18 months, loved it, unfortunately made the mistake of running with it in my pocket, that managed to stuff it completely after a few months... My gf got one at the same time, hers is still going strong.

My 5th gen got stolen :( I imagine it would still be my primary PMP if that didn't happen.

My first 5th gen had a hard drive failure and was replaced under warantee by Apple with little fuss. The replacement has been going strong for years. I don't use it much since I got my iPhone 3Gs, but it still holds a charge like a champ. It will likely end up going to my son.

I gave mine to my wife. The only problem so far is that we had trouble finding a nice case for her. The 5th gen video iPod is the adopted step daughter, no one has cases for it and not all "classic" caqses will fir it.

Still, I bought the Touch 3g for myself :)

I have had my 5G ipod for years now. Ever since they first came out. About a year ago it stopped working so i threw it in the console of my car where it rattled around for about 4 months. One day I found it again and figured i would turn it on and perhaps take it apart.. or turn it into an external hard drive or something, but to my amazement it worked again. Have been using it for the last 8 months again and I am loving having it back. Just bought a new iPhone 3GS, but it will still not completely replace the 5G until it eventually decides to die (which is hopefully never).

I use mine every day, on my commute to work, connected to a FM transmitter and I have it connected all day long to my work computer. This might be one of the best devices I've ever had.

yeah mine was good before it accidently went in the wash (honest i didnt do it on purpose!) so its toast :( mine was alot more durable then the ipod classic my mom got (its play/pause botton stopped working after warranty expired) so she got a nano it was cheaper then fixing it . we still use it for music on a speaker dock since the dock can control it,

Ditto - mine is bashed and scratched and still works fine. I use it to provide music in the car so it even gets frozen fairly regularly when I forget it out there. That's been going on for two years now and still no sign of a problem.
