I'll have to get my hands on one and see how it stacks up. This is exciting though.
EDIT: I should add some more info.
- f/1.8 compared to f/2.0 on the S95.
- Both cameras go to ISO 3200.
- P300 @ 12MP vs. S95 @ 10MP (eh, not happy with that -- usually more MP means more noise).
- P300 has a "backside illumination sensor." Thanks to Apple and the iPhone 4, these are going to become all the rage.
Discussion about
It finally sounds like Nikon has an answer to Canon's S95!
It even looks REALLY similar. This kind of constant aping is actually something that drives me crazy about many of the Japanese camera companies. It's like a technological echo chamber; it would be really nice if they were all doing different, innovative things. (Hint: it's 2011, how many more years do I have to keep asking for integrated GPS in my point and shoot?)
Yeah, totally agree.
Regarding GPS, it's interesting you say that. Canon just announced a camera with integrated GPS: Canon PowerShot SX230 HS.

The Canon's S95 has a larger sensor (1/1.7 in. CCD vs 1/2.5 CMOS)
Not sure the Sony sourced "backside illumination sensor" makes much difference compared to a bigger CCD also found in the Panasonic LX5 and Olympus XZ-1.
