is this the ideal DSLR for the money?

I am looking at my first DSLR. I am having trouble deciding exactly which to buy, but have been looking at this one seriously. I want one that has a lot of features, that works with most lenses, etc. I want to spend around $1000 for at least the camera and two lenses. This comes in at about $800 right now with a 15-55mm lens, so I will have a little something left for another lens.

Is this the right choice? Should I wait for new releases or black friday price drops?

Thanks in advance!

Worked for me as my first DSLR (although not my first SLR). Just don't expect a whole lot of capabilities from the video engine (not very customizable, only 20fps at full HD, focus noise is picked up, no external mic, and not as simple to use as a point and shoot). With a main focus on photography and some video use, I think it's an excellent balance of features for the $.

I don't have it still (planning on buying it soon though) but all the reviews I've read put it in a very good place based on its capabilities. A definitive selling point is it's video mode. Even though is not as customizable as andybryant said, it looks amazing and it beats the competition easily (of similar models, of course).

So overall I think it's definitely worth the money.

Thanks so much for the input. I have been agonizing over getting this vs. the Nikon D90 with an 18-200mm AF-S VR lens. I do have some concerns regarding the video mode in other reviews I have seen as well.

@ Andy - which camera do you use now?

From the sample videos I've seen of the T1i. The T1i shoots better video than the D90.

IMOP - YES. This camera shoots super great photos, is easy to use and the 720 video is better when you add your big ole Tele'foto!

I'd go for the T1i for sure. You can get it fairly cheap and canon has a plethora of lense options that will make the hobbiest stoked to own this camera.

BUT! Go to the store and feel the camera in your hand, cause that will be the way to choose these things. I liked the canon feel better than the Nikon.

I've had this for 3 weeks now for shooting higher megapixel photos and video of my newborn. It's an excellent & fast camera. Has same or more features than just the previous versions of 1D or 5D. Get this camera and the super value for money $100 Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 II lens and you're capable of some very very good photos & video straight away.

I bought onw 3 weeks ago, newbie to DSLRs.
The camera has great photos, but as a video lover, which had several digital video cameras, I was amazed by the quality of the video.
I saw many HD samples at YouTube before buying the camera, and they all looked great, but when I started to see the outcome of the videos I took I was really blown out.
They have great colors, the picture is crisp and the shallow depth of field is just perfect, something by the way I have never seen before on video cameras.
So from my short experience with this camera, I'll say its the best value ever.
