Is it me, or does a projector built into a digital camera seem like a huge gimmick?

Every time I see one of the commercials that Nikon uses to advertise it, I cringe! Is there really that much of a demand to immediately display photos?

To be fair, I guess it simplifies the process of trying to find a cable and hooking your camera up to a television. But it seems like all this R&D money being spent on how to display photos in a cheesy way would be better spent on researching ideas on how to improve the image sensor or optics of the device.

I bought my mother a Sony Cybershot W120 for Mother's Day 2008. She uses it all the time, bringing it to family gatherings and taking photos of the kids and her siblings and so on. About a month ago at my aunt's house she had left it on the dining room table and I was bored, so I turned it on to look at the photos she had taken.

EVERY SINGLE PHOTO she had ever taken--EVER--was still on there. Thousands of photos from the last two years. And it's not like she doesn't know how to get the photos off--she's uploaded photos on to Facebook and sends pictures in the e-mail all the time. I'm sure I've pointed out the "format" function to her as well.

it's just that she likes having all of the photos in one place. When she's talking with relatives, she really does like to just whip out the camera and show off the photos she's taken recently. A projector might be cheesy, but it's certainly a step up from having a bunch of people in their 50's and 60's huddled around and squinting at a three inch screen.

Exactly. I'm thinking about buying this as a wedding present as well for that reason. However I'd like to see how much of an image it can actually throw out before I do actually get one.

I was thinking of something like this for use around my workplace. pictures of white boards, papers, whatever that you can project up. Perhaps overlaying diagrams for creative work, white boarding out a house interior with a projected wall. Software, networking, prototyping, mockups, etc. could be done this way if you want a mobile semi-smart board. Depending on price, picture quality, and projector quality, I would consider this item.

Re: Lamp... my mom totally keeps all pictures on her card after I bought her an HCSD she'd never fill up. :)

Whoa! That's an awesome use case though.
