Is Cyanogen's ROM build not the best thing for this phone?
I have to say, I just flashed is 3.6.1 with apps on my class 6 SD card and the user experience is snappy, featureful and amazing! It's a bit of a pity that you can't get this user experience out of the box, but if you haven't already definitely take the time and effort to flash this build, it will really improve your productivity with this phone.
The Hero rom rocks... on the Hero. The Hero has more horsepower than the G1 so you probably won't be happy with the flash performance on the G1. It will take a while before they optimize flash to run smoothly on a G1. In the meantime Cyanogen's Rom (www.google.com/search?q=Cyanogen+Rom) seems to be a substantial improvement to 1.5.
The biggest problem with hero and rosie for me is the dialer. If you keep trying to make phone calls and receive phone calls it bogs down and lags up the phone. Im on Cyan 3.6.1 also and it is definitely my number one choice at this point.
I have Cyan 3.6.2 with his recovery image 1.3 and it is amazing. not only can i now use nandroid without needing a computer(all done in the recovery area) It is fast he is always optomizing it. I doubt it will be long before he ports flash to his rom or adds a couple other of the Hero's features.
Franly, is Flash really that much of a killer app? There's already a native Youtube client, so really you're left with Hulu (not going to run great if at all on mobile) and porno sites as the only real reason for Flash. And porn on a mobile phone, really?
Flash is a nice to have but far from a must have. Hero looks awesome, but is sluggish on this Phone. Features are great, but they have to usable, it's not just about the checkboxes.

I'm running 3.6.5 and have to say it is pretty fantastic. The default overclock has improved performance greatly. The transitions and modified icons are also really nice touches.
do you have to flash the new spl (2005) first? when i tried to do this it bricked my g1. can you use the hard spl?
Cyanogens ROM only needs the Hard SPL, he is not a fan of the new one i don't think. If i were you i would flash oneof his stable earlier ROM's first he still has it listed on the XDA then flash his new one. I had managed to brick my phone when i first tried his ROM but i didn't flash the new radio, that is definitely required.
Just to get my noobishness out of the way: Once I root my G1 (and it's just a matter of time until I do), are the builds pretty much the same as the original Android?
I want to get all the advantages of a rooted phone, but I like my Android as it is. Do I get to keep that?

There are stock versions yes, there are versions that add onto stock and then there are the ones that are completely different. Granted right now there is only maybe ten or so different Rom's each one offers something different, and i believe there is a ROM that gives you basically stock with Root access.
I want to try flashing ROM on my G1 but I am almost going to sell it...
I have an iPhone 3GS and wanted to play around with Android. I would so be flashing ROM's on my G1 if it had AT&T 3G.
G1 with edge just wont cut it, and I hate always carrying around two phones (iPhone).
Can I do a full back up, and then Flash it back to Default T-Mobile ROM? I am sure it's doable but, edge...

You can't create a backup but if you reverse the steps you used to Root and flash a Rom mainly reflashing the Dream(something) file then flashing the cupcake update you will be back to stock in no time. When i went back to stock it took maybe 15 minutes.
There you go that would work, although i am not a fan of the Magic, you could still root it though and their ROM's are as good as the G1's
Just rooted and flashed 3.6.8.1 and it pretty slick. I notice the lack lag more than the responsiveness. Battery life seems to be a tad less, but that's probably the overclocking. Be sure to follow all the steps: use a class 6 sd card, create your ext and swap partitions, upgrade your radio and put the audio resources on your sd after flashing.

You really don't need the swap for Cyanogen his rom is fast without it, they are currently trying to tell if it is actually making his ROM less responsive. I have had his Roms for two months now and they have always been great and lag free.
Btw Cyanogen's 3.9.5 with all of the Donut goodies and other hacks like FLAC is awesome.
I just put the latest cyanogen rom on my G1, and I'm so freakin impressed. I'd been using the vanilla JF rom that is a hack of the t-mobile official rom, for a while and I've just noticed a whole lot of lagginess in everything. I even reverted to the official rom for a while to no avail.
I haven't even done anything fancy like putting apps on my sd card yet with cyanogen and its already kicking ass for me. Everything is just snappy.

He does not disappoint plus he is the first to implement new things from the Donut build into his ROM, like the power manger widget and FLAC support(although thats not official more of a hack) but still very impressive.
Idk, Cyanogen is awesome at optimization especially his stable builds. I think the Google dev team should hire him because he is that good. It would be a win for everyone.
yes, I concur that cyanogen is making some amazing things
brett, give it a try! let us know what you think!
infinity, logic would say that the guys with goog/android are pretty good to get on their teams. Imagine what they could do if they didnt have to 'dumb things down' to keep things standardized and working on all devices and such.

I agree, although i don't think they dumb it down to keep it compatible i think they dumb it down for the average public who would have no idea how to use it if they had it. Apps can be run off the SD but one retarded person would pull the SD card out with the phone on and screw their system or ruin their SD card and it would be Google's fault not their own. If it wasn't for average people we would be in a whole different level of technology.
that's what disclaimers are for. Then again, you can always get the Dev phone. But they don't optimize it enough.
I don't mean to sound harsh, but what ARE the android google staff working on, besides donut? I mean, Cyanogen is one guy and comes up with updates a couple of times a week. I don't know how many are on the goog dev team, but I imagine a lot, and you don't hear as much for them.

True, the problem with the Google Devs is that they have to make sure that every little bit of code is ok to be massively shipped out. Cyanogen pumps out a few tweaks a week and optomizations as well as apps and tweaks from other devs like the new launcher in 3.9.7 and the phone and mms tweaks, other devs coded them he just integrated them. The google devs are rewriting code and code for every phone that is out there. With almost 15 phones that are going to be out by this year they have to make sure Android will work smoothly on all of them.
Kill the phone as in killing the processor or the battery. The phones are underclocked out of the box, you are really only clocking up to the actual specs for the processor not over it. And as for battery with his builds it actually improves battery with all his other tweaks and optimizations.
True, battery life is the main reason, but i haven't seen many real Cyanogen followers on this site but I have seen significant battery performance his new updates even with heavy use and a lot of push notifications.
Well i installed it today
(not without some tense moments )
only thing i have noticed wrong is the random reboots i used to get are back and i am still unsure of whether the battery life is better or worse
other then that holy shit is this the best thing that has happened to my phone since i got it

What ROM are you using, i remember i had random reboots with one of his roms, i just don't remember which one.
If you are up to it, flash his 3.9.7. In my opinion it is stable it doesn't have any reboot problems i would just wipe before you flash. It has a lot more optimization and the modified launcher and MMS app which make it comparable to any home replacement. With the modified launcher app you can actually hide apps from your app dock.
My primary gripe with this ROM at this point is the HTC keyboard interfering with the physical keyboard, which happens inconsistently. But when it does, my right Shift and Alt keys don't work which is annoying. Other than that this is perfect. I upgraded to 4.0.2 from 3.6.8.1 without wiping and am running great!
I think that is a known issue and he is trying to work on it but i believe there is a lot of proprietary stuff involved with making it work right.
@ganesh, never had those problems, except for some forcecloses with TasKiller, which were fixed with 4.0.2. rolling out.
@deinfinityx although Cyanogen may be adding some tweaks that weren't his, you can put it up as the equivalent for a team. :)
@brettdunnam My battery life has improved substantially from barely a day to day-and-a-half. Which isn't glorious, but at least if got something. I mean, BESIDES all the improvements made on the actual software.

Oh i know, i wasn't trying to bash him, i just didn't want to say he did them which is wrong. It was a team effort on all their parts to incorporate it all. Plus 4.1experimental will be coming out soon and i can't wait to try it.
I'm rocking the latest 4.0.4 Cyanogen Mod...I installed the CM Updater to make sure I'm notified of the latest stable builds. These ROM's are the best thing since sliced bread as far as I'm concerned. It's like my G1 is the phone I thought it was supposed to be when it came out.
Dwangs 1.13 over at XDA is faster than Cyans latest ROM, I've run them both. So to answer the question, no, Cyanogen's build is not the best thing for this phone (YMMV)
