iphone/ipad calendar not syncing via icloud

We are having problems getting our calendars to sync. Data will be entered into the calendar and it is supposed to automatically sync to our other devices via icloud. So far, it is syncing the other information (address book, notes etc), just not the calendar. The Apple salseman thinks it has to do with a setting in our firewalls and says we will need to call the IT guys out here to adjust the firewalls. He says this will have to be done every time we add a new device. Is he just trying to get our cash or is this truely our problem and solution?

Here are some things to check based upon my experience. Are you using Gmail for mail and calendar? What is your default calendar in settings. If your default calendar is your Google calendar, it will not sync with iCloud. This may be the same for exchange accounts.
