iPhone 3.0 software on iPod Touch 1st gen, is it really worth it?

I haven't tried the iPhone 3.0 software, and i don't think the features alone are worth the cost of the update.

Also you don't get any BT features on the 1st gen version.

Is the update really worth it? to me it seems like a minor patch, and copy paste is not a really a selling feature, to not include it from the start is just lame.

I've been wondering this, I never even upgraded to 2.0 let alone 3.0. I am just wondering if it is worth the money.

Anyone taken the dive and wanna let us know if it's worth it?

Isn't 2.0 the update that added apps? Seems to me that you're missing out on a good portion of what the platform has to offer if you're still using 1.X firmware. I'd say bite the bullet and spend the $20 already.

well, i was in your shoes 2 weeks ago. I didn't upgrade from 1.1 since i got the touch. The 3.0 software offers a TON of new features, and I am really pleased with this update. I got mine for free cause I downloaded the gm of the software...then i restored it again, and then they let me download the official for free...(apparently they thought I was a developer) haha.

So really it's up to you. Do need all the new applications and apps? It's your choice. I made mine....upgrade

absolutely update to 2.0 that makes the ipod touch. idk if 3.0 is worth it but may as well go all the way.

My favorite thing about 3.0 is I find it so much easier to type - the auto-correction seems much less aggressive. It seems to err on the side of what you actually typed, whereas before it was overly eager to change what you were intending.

More importantly it actually learning again. Early on it would learn a new word if just one time you hit the "x", then with 2.2.1 it wouldn't learn AT ALL unless you repeatedly entered the words in the google search bar in safari.

Well you are certainly not getting as much with the 1st gen as the 2nd gen (I also have the 1st gen), but I really like being able to search though my stuff (I hope it will be possible for app developers to tap into the spotlight API at some point) and the autofill and remember password is also really nice.
Browsing is faster, too.

If these things are not worth the upgrade fee to you, then you probably shouldn't upgrade.

I have an external bluetooth dongle for my iPod Touch that gets me most of the BlueTooth features and have for more than a year. Quite a bummer that this was never in the original....

I purchased it for the improved audio book (audible) support and the improved podcast support. Both now have a 30 second rewind feature which is awesome and the ability to move around the audio file is improved.

Yeah, LOVE the 30 second rewind button. A small thing but turns out to be really useful with all the podcasts I listen to. Probably great for audiobooks too.

That's why I updated to 3.0 also. I use my ipod mostly for podcasts and audio books.

30 second rewind is so helpful. Plus they finally fixed the bug that treated audio podcasts donloaded directly to the device as videos (and paused them when exiting out of the iPod app or putting the screen to sleep).

I hadn't heard about that before I got the update, but that, combined with the copy paste, make it worth while for me.

I have to use a login/password to get onto the Wi-Fi at work, which is a daily headache, so I think at some point it will become worth it to me just for that. Copy/Paste and Search will be icing on the cake, and Bluetooth will just have to wait until my 1st Gen needs replacing.

For me the Spotlight search and copy and paste, along with some performance improvements in some apps (NY Times read for example) made the upgrade useful for me.

It's only $9.95 for the upgrade, so it's not really a big decision. Unless you are in a critical economic situation (and if so, upgrading your iPod Touch should be the last of your concerns), then just bite the bullet and upgrade.

I have a 1st gen too and OS 2.0 was a much bigger deal because it added apps. I paid for 3.0 because I use my touch a ton each day and really do use it as a mini computer/pda. Might not be worth it for some people. I've also noticed some POSSIBLE battery life issues when using wifi, though I haven't narrowed down exactly what's happening yet.

Biggest improvements for me are the copy and paste, the 30 second rewind for audio, and the fact that you can buy and rent movies directly on the touch now.

Forgot about another plus - the landscape keyboard for notes. Makes typing a good bit faster.

Landscape e-mail too. Much better.

Landscape Stocks....if you're in to that. (i'm not)

Its a perfect upgrade.. the Search feature works like a dream and the landscape keyboard finally makes typing less of an ordeal. The Copy Paste is a great feature. The "Shake to Shuffle" works well but its not exactly a feature I wanted..still the more the merrier..All in all a worthy upgrade at INR 500 its not a bad deal at all..Waiting to test the Voice Memo feature.

But all this aside, Apple not giving Bluetooth for iPod touch 1st gen is cruelty and charging an amount from 2nd Gen iPod Touch owners just to unlock Bluetooth functionality is plain Tyranny..hopefully they will resolve this sick mindset in the future.
Also they give the 1st gen owners an option to exchange the old ipod touch and get a 3rd gen Ipod Touch..Does anyone have the same pain??

I guess the real reason to get the update is for the eventuality that new apps won't work with earlier versions of the firmware. Almost every app I use had posted an update in the last 2 weeks, and while they're all currently backwards compatible, there's always the possibility that new apps won't be so kind.

push notifications for me were enough for the upgrade to 3.0. It's not being utilized greatly right now, but the potential is there. I use my iPod touch for IM around the house when I'm not near my computer, and push notifications make it so much better.

I don't think the 3.0 software update is worth it for iPod touch 1st gen since it doesn't get take advantage of quite a few of the new features in the OS. All the new updates are available if you jailbreak your iPod Touch anyway; so I don't know, $10 seems a bit steep to me compared to if I were to buy a new iPod Touch whenever the 3rd generation comes out...

I was also contemplating whether I should upgrade to 3.0, but I used my iPod touch everyday for apps, music and web browser. Although it would be nice to have an iPhone on a better network, I appreciate the landscape keyboard, spotlight search, copy and paste and iPod music accessibility for apps. I can finally use iScrobbler without jail-breaking and having all those updates (better later than never) was worth the $10.

I didn't find that the 3.0 update had anything that was essential. I personally like to keep all my gadgets up to date (and a $10 upgrade is annoying but isn't a back breaker), so I did have the 3.0 update right around when it came out. The only things that I found really helpful were the landscape keyboard on many of the apps (especially email), the spotlight feature from the main screen, the adjustable fast forward and rewind in the music player, and of course copy and paste. So if you don't use/care about any of that then I would give it a pass (although idk how you could pass on copy/paste). You definatley get more out of a 2nd gen upgrade with the bluetooth.

Personally, I think it is only worth upgrading to 3.0 due to the features of universal search and the ability to copy/paste.
Otherwise there is really nothing exciting.

I purchased the 3.0 update and am glad that I did. It is worth it for the copy and paste, push notifications and Google calendar integration.

I myself got the 3.o update for my 2nd gen ipod by torrenting the GM version of the dev only 3.0 OS, that Apple released a week before it came out. It's the exact same to what they offer in the itunes store, byte to byte. Just go somewhere like piratebay, search up ipod touch 3.0 gm, and when your torrent is complete, go to itunes with your Touch plugged in, and press your ipod's section. Then press shift and hold on to shift and press restore. It will open a navigation window. Just point it to where the 3.0 .ipsw is, and wait for about a half an hour. Then sync all your music with it, and you'll be set.

Yes, it's worth it. Especially the push notifications.

Push really isn't worth it on a iPod touch. When you put the device to sleep the wifi automatically disconnects to save battery life. So when your iPod is in sleep mode for a while you won't receive push notifications.

No and Yes ?

It totally kills battery life and slows it down. Unless there is an application that you need that uses 3.0 features don't do it. My battery life feels like it is split in half.

But the copy and paste makes it almost worth it. So does the updated Mail Application. The search feature is also kinda cool.

I suppose it is what your needs are.

I am experiencing wifi stability issue since I have updated to OS 3.0. Both at home and at work with different wifi routers. From time to time (in particular using safari and mail apps), the ipod claims that it is not connected. I have to quit the application. Sometime it find again the network by itself, sometime it asks me to select the network, and in the worst case I have to go to settings and let it perform a new wifi discovery. My computer is also connected to wifi and the connection works fine. This is my only concern about the OS 3.0 update. I could have updated only for the landscape mode in mail. (sorry for my english)

I had this issue with a few of the networks I connect to on a regular basis. What I had to do was forget the network, and re-add it like it was the first time I was connecting. After I did that the issues went away.

If you have a first gen iPod Touch, I would not recommend getting it. If you want to spend $10, then sure, go ahead. There are some small improvements. However, with the lack of microphone, speaker, bluetooth, etc, the first gen Touch doesn't really get any major updates. Just my two sense.

in OS 3.0, I noticed that some 3D-intensive app's performance improved a lot.
maybe OpenGLES has been optimized.

so i think it is worth to buy.

I actually heard people complaining that 3.0 is too heavy for the ipod 1st gen. It slows things down since it is build for the fast processor of the Iphone 3GS. Can anybody confirm this?

It might be a little bit slower when it is booting up, but overall I haven't notice much of a change in speed on my iPod. It probably depends on the Wi-Fi that you are connected to as well.

3.0 on the 1st gen touch is a waste of money! there is little to no benefit for a touch. luckily enough there are sites out there that supply you with links to the apple servers to d/l the fw. i am very new here so i wont go linking such sites as i dont know the rules very well yet. but a quick search on google should provide answers.
i still remember when 2.0 came out for the touch. they wanted AU$20 for it!?!? i paid AU$650 for it the day it was launched. so i obviously felt very ripped off. thats when i started looking for it elsewhere.
just remember when you're updating hold "shift" when clicking either update or restore. its best not to get the fw from torrent as you cannot be sure you're getting what you want.

I also like the ability to listen to things 2x. At first I didn't think I would like the feature, but after listening to all my podcasts for the last 2 weeks at twice the speed it seems funny when I go back to normal speed; not to mention I get through twice as much material. As I try to listen to most of the TWIT network feeds as well as the GDGT podcast with a half hour one-way commute, it really helps me to get through them all. The only drawback is when I am listening to Security Now! and Gibson is really getting into the technical details, but the 30 second rewind comes in hand there and I can then slow things back down to make sure that I am picking up what he is putting down :-)

I don't see why we have to pay to type in landscape mode. Apple is biased toward their annoying iPhone. iPhone owners don't have to pay for updates. >:(

I have a 1st gen touch which I haven't upgraded and an iphone 3G which I have.
I see no point in shelling out to upgrade the touch, you really don't get much for your money and it's pretty cheeky that they're gouging us again after they already stung us to go from 1.1 to 2.0.
I don't think you'll ever be in a position where there will be v3.0 apps that you could run that you're missing out on, simply because any "3.0 only" apps will be "3.0 only" because of the graphics chipset they need, not the actual software platform, so the touch (1st or 2nd gen) still won't measure up.

I upgraded my ist gen touch on the weekend and to be honest cant see much of a difference. You can now shake to shuffle music although doubt id use that other than a gimmick.

Havent seen the copy or paste function as yet but not using my touch as much as i used to since going to a dell mini 9i with 3G

This discussion was on point in its timing as I was wondering if it would be worth it with the rumors of camera equipped gen 3 ipod touch and the apple tablet. I know we are only talking about ten bucks here, but my current one is beginning to feel rather long in the tooth, and without a desire for an At&t contract and and plenty of local free wifi, I am looking for a reason to upgrade my hardware, not software. Has there been any discussion of which processor the new Ipod touch will use? I assume the same as the 3gs and the Pre..
