ipad mini...!! Hope it works out for apple
Heard the ipad mini is coming out. not sure how it is going to work for apple
Although it conflicts with Steve's philosophy (I remember his distinct sandpaper quote) I feel that if Apple set their mind to a 7" tablet they could do it well. It has been rumoured for over 2 years and there hasn't been a release yet so I hope you are not holding your breath.
The more interesting question is what will Apple do to differentiate it from the new iPad. Size is the obvious factor, but perhaps it should be cheaper as well. So then is it "just" a price and screen size difference, or will we see something groundbreaking and exciting?

It being Apple who knows if and when or what they do. I think thats part of the fun for tech people is guessing what they will do next. unlike MS who has been pretty boring (except for the possibly new surface devices) Apple over the last few years has been one of the more entertaining tech companies to watch.
I think as this point its Apple's game too lose. them introducing a new 7inch form factor could be good for them. A 7inch 3G/4G device with 16 or 32GB storage with the application library that apple already has would be something to consider especially if you are already invested in their ecosystem. I personally like the 7 inch size over the larger iPad. i ordered a Nexus 7 to try it out.
as for price i am sure that if the "going price" for a 7inch device is 250 apple will sell their at 300 and if they do that i think people would buy that device. If they step into this space it think it will be similar to how the iPod touch seems to be 1 step back from the iPhone.
Now, personally i don't think Apple will sell one. but with all things Apple who know for sure.

Honestly? I think the entire reason they haven't done one yet, other than Steve's hilariously typical and inaccurate rant, are it would simply be a direct competitor to their 10" tablet. They experienced this with the ipod shuffle. Low end is not something Apple usually does well. They simply could not get the cost down low enough to compete with the Nexus 7, or the upcoming Kindle Fire 2's. At work, I'm approached frequently for tech advise because well, I'm the most technical guy there. I had a coworker ask me if she should get "that new tiny google iPad". That's the kind of consumers you are talking about. I told her spend a little more and just get the iPad2 because I know she's already a huge mac/iphone user, and 10" isn't that much bigger than 7". Then I gave her my New iPad to play with, but warned her the cheaper 2 doesn't have as nice of a screen.
Simply put, I don't see Apple making an iPad Mini. They've shown they are more than willing to follow Steve's orders well after his death in the form of the completely childish patent lawsuits. And despite the huge losses, they plod onward with that failing strategy. If they are willing to do that, you can be sure they won't release a 7" tablet for fear of disturbing his eternal rest.
