iOS 4.2 for iPad is finally out in beta!
I'm extremely excited to get this going on the iPad, which is in desperate need of iOS 4's various improvements (namely fast app switching, multitasking, and unified inbox).
If you've also got access to the beta, post up your experiences and first impressions with iOS 4.2 on the iPad here! (I'll definitely be doing so when I get home later today.)

Do u need your iPad UDID activated? or is it enough to have your iPhone activated...
Not true! You can still downgrade via some terminal-fu and other simple trickery. But it's not jailbreaking. See previously on gdgt: gdgt.com/discuss/does-anyone-know-how-revert-older...

Sorry, but that's only true for iPhones with the early bootrom (all 3G's, 3GS's produced before 10/09). The new 3GS's (the one I had), all iPads, and all iPhone 4's have the new bootrom. The new bootrom will not work with step four of your provided link.
I was mainly talking about how there's no official way to downgrade without hacking around with the terminal. So your post still justifies that. :-P Thanks for trying to help though.

Currently installing.
Right off the bat, it looks like the "restore" didn't truly restore my apps from backup. After the device rebooted with the new OS, I have to tell iTunes to add a bunch of my apps back to the iPad. I'm not too hopeful that my data will remain intact.
We'll see! I'll update this as I go along!

Hah, the "orientation lock" switch is actually a mute switch now (like on the iPhone). If I bring up the multitasking bar and swipe to the right, I can lock the orientation (in landscape or portrait) via a software toggle -- exactly like on the iPhone.
In addition to the iPod controls on the screen, you can also control brightness via a slider on this screen as well.

I hope they change this, or at least give users the option. The orientation lock switch made a lot more sense for the iPad. I know they're trying to be consistent (right?) but now I'm going to have to interrupt what I'm looking at, double tap Home, swipe to the left, press the rotation lock icon. All I had to do before was flip the switch!
It's also very strange that Apple changed the function of a *physical* button. I can see a lot of confused users come November.

Hopefully there's a setting for it. If you set the button to "Orientation Lock" you get a mute/unmute button on the multitaking tray. If you set the button to "Mute" you'll get the orientation lock button in the tray. That would make everyone happy...I hope they do it!
The setting should be set to "Orientation Lock" by default too. I still can't believe they are changing the function of a physical button after 7 months. Isn't this why camera apps aren't allowed to use the volume buttons to take a photo? Apple said it would confuse users. I don't see how this will be any less confusing for people.

My upgrade on the iPad was flawless...all apps in the same order as pre-upgrade, all databases are intact including HanDBase, twitter accounts, instapaper, etc. Universal Inbox already collated my 4 accounts nicely, but as usual switched from my exchange server to me.com as the default (every upgrade does that) but even my signature is still intact. This was the most painless upgrade yet.
Man, I wasn't going to consider not-having-jailbreak, but I see they've put a brightness slider in the multi-tasking popup, negating 95% of what I use SBSettings for.... more and more tempting, we'll see if greenpoison can handle it.
HELP! So much for the flawless iOS 4.2 install. My 3G activation has been nuked and now confined only to WiFi. If try to connect, I get the warning that the device is not activated. Every time I connect the iPad to sync with iTunes I get a message that new carrier settings need to be downloaded but this does not fix the problem. Has anyone else had their 3G activation nuked by iOS 4.2 beta1 or is it just me. My carrier is Rogers in Canada.
Did solve the issue by using unlockit.co.nz which is an APN changer. Just had to pick my carrier from the list, Rogers, and it updated the APN settings so the iPad has been working fine ever since. Not sure if this helps others who cannot update their credit card information.
