With the release of the Kinect and availability of open source drivers, hackers have quickly opened up the Kinect to see what sorts of cool things one can do with it. In the month or so since the Kinect has been released, there's been a number of interesting projects.
Here are a few:
Autonomous flying drone that uses the Kinect for obstacle avoidance: www.joystiq.com/2010/12/06/kinect-hacks-davinci-dr...
Autonomous driving robot using a Kinect sensor and a Roomba: www.joystiq.com/2010/11/19/kinect-enables-robot-to...
Kinect used as a multitouch interface: www.engadget.com/2010/11/11/hacked-kinect-taught-t...
Using Kinect for shadow puppets: www.vimeo.com/16985224
It's pretty exciting stuff since the Kinect essentially functions as a poor man's LiDAR. There's all sorts of applications one can potentially use it for, from obstacle detection in robots to 3D object generation. It'll be fun to see how people further hack it as understanding and drivers for the device mature!
