In the process of upgrading to Ubuntu 10.04 this afternoon, anyone else take the plunge yet?

Personally, I think think it's smoother running, more polished and a tad faster than KK. The built-in Gwibber social tool and tighter Ubuntu One integration are also a plus. If I noticed a difference on my 8 year-old system, I'm sure you'll reap the benefits on yours. Enjoy!

Also, please mention your impressions on the OS in a future podcast. Maybe an Ubuntu roundtable episode in the future?

I upgraded to Ubuntu 10.04 using Parallels on my MacBook. It is much better and easier to navigate through.

I'd like to if it wasn't for loosing half my 8Gig RAM and that uncomfortable feeling you get when messing with HD partitions, one which holds your working Primary OS. I'll just run it live from USB for now. I really like it though.

This is why my main computer is Linux free.

I have it running on my desktop and netbook. I'm dual-booting on the desktop because I still need to get my game on.

So far, I'm really enjoying it.

I installed it on my EeePC 1201N but alas, no wireless driver. I tried the fix I used in 9.10 but it didn't work. I was hoping it would work so I could fully switch my netbook to Ubuntu. It got great battery life though. Also, the whole thing seems a lot more polished.

Just a heads up I just did it about 3 hours ago and when it asks you to select the partion for the new GRUB, do not i repeat DO NOT select your windows partion. It will remove the boot loader and not let you access windows unless you go into the testdisk and recover the original boot loader for Windows.

If you want to save your current settings. go with an upgrade otherwise it doesn't really matter which you chose although there is the other os issue right now. So I'd say update.

I have, and I really like the changes. DEFINITELY quicker and overall "flashier".

I've tried Ubuntu Netbook Edition, it seems fantastic. I wanted to boot to it from a flash drive on my mac... but I think we all knew the outcome of that...

I have found that with a few tweaks, Ubuntu (main distro) runs well on Mac hardware. For some reason (firmware related?), I needed to manually enable sound in /etc/modprobe.d/alsa-base.conf by adding one line at the end:

options snd_hda_intel model=imac24

I don't know if this is still necessary.

Also, a work-around resume/lock issues:
! gconf-editor
> apps > gnome-power-manager > lock
Uncheck every box except "Use screensaver options" (check this one)

Be sure to install the proprietary hardware graphics driver appropriate for your Mac. It makes the screen look very nice. In my 2007 iMac 20", the graphics chipset was ATI so I had to install the fglrx driver.

All these posts are making me glad I DL'ed the image last night to put on my laptop. I figure that thing is only used for internet stuff anyway, so why not ditch vista!

I installed it on a new HTPC I built. Works like a dream as a file server, web server, XBMC [server], remote downloader, everything. Audio over HDMI (NVIDIA ION) was a bitch to setup but eventually got it and not it's running like a charm.

I have installed Ubuntu and Fedora on several PCs (myself, friends, and neighbours). All of them have said that they miss the poor security and high cost of ownership.

I also have a Windoze 7 laptop at home which seems to run just fine. Does exactly what my wife needs. I always look forward to the weekends being tied down running Spyware Blaster updates, Spybot Search and Control updates, and full anti-virus scans on her laptop. Okay, I have a sick sense of humour.

On a serious note, Linux and Unix are about having low-cost choices.
