Implementing Flash for iPhone web browser.

Couldn't Apple implement flash similarly to the way they handle video on the iPhone? Allow users to download a flash application or provide it in an update. Whenever the user comes across flash content on a website the play symbol or a flash symbol would appear on it. This would handle the problem of have flash automatically running and draining the battery and resources, and it would give people who would like to access the flash content a way to do so. This solution would require Apple and Adobe working together on the application which was supposably happening a year ago. Here is to hoping someone who can actually do something about this is member of gdgt and reads this stuff.

I happen to be in agreement with I don't miss Flash. Most sites on my iPhone load very quickly on Safari and the absence of Flash is a blessing in most cases. What I think the iPhone could use is an ecma scripting language similar to that of AS3. If I were Apple I would build a migration tool for AS3 to an ecma scripting language on the iPhone called (for lack of a better word) iScript. I read the press release from Macromedia today about their latest offering. To me, using Flash to design iPhone games has it's advantages in some respects but will certainly have it's short comings if I know Apple.

I believe Adobe wants a piece of the ever growing Apple pie. However, I believe Apple does not want them in their camp. Let's face it. Having XCode being the development environment for iPhone sells a lot more Apple computers.

I am of the camp that says.. "who cares about Flash".

First thing i thought was oh no how are you going to surf the internet without flash support, but to be honest the last few years web sites have been shying away from the all flash based sites more and more. I think since the 1st gen iphone there has been 2 sites i couldn't go to because they were flash sites. Problems i see are alot of sites use flash based players for video even news sites. Now throw M$ in the game trying to switch people over to silverlight, then what, flash and silverlight support?

I think apple will hold off as long as it can hoping HTML 5's video tag becomes an alternative to flash based mobile video playback.

I wonder what flash would do to the iPhone's processor and battery, especially since netbook performance with Flash isn't always that good.

All I want is Hulu. Even if they just made a Hulu app, I'd love to have Hulu on my iPhone.

I completely agree, if I can get hulu then they can keep flash for as long as they want.

I was a big supporter of bringing flash to the iPhone, but I've become accustomed to not having it and really don't miss it. I have a feeling that flash would really slow down safari, and drain your battery in the process. Safari has enough bugs as it is to add flash to the mix.

Now, if Apple were to make it available I wouldn't complain, because most likely they would find a way for it to work without crashing safari and draining battery. I guess I have just stopped caring about flash as much.

The question is this; Why should you settle on not having flash? Every other smart phone out there has it or will get it this fall (I'm looking at you Palm). Apple really needs to get with the program here. Who cares if it drains the battery, video drains the battery too.

I would rather have flash on the 3gs. I think it could handle it better. I think it would just tank on the 3G.
