I'm imagining a killer ipad killer combo of boxee on a tablet like the Adam Notion Ink running android. Would something like that be even possible? (notion is said to have flash video capabilities)

Or are you guys just doing an mini-app version for android?

Thanks for making yourself available for Q's.

Reading through the posts, it appears that the BB will be running a Linux distro, yet when answering some questions about Netflix/Silverlight, you mention CE. Is the goal to have a Linux based BB that can do Netflix streaming or are we looking at two different flavors of BB ?

How will the BB be able to adapt to future changes from content providers (Hulu, Netflix, etc). If they make a change to how they are streaming content which breaks the box, how does it get "fixed" ? With an HTPC there will eventually be a fix, tweak, workaround...can I assume the same for the BB ?
flag this
jnus
...still can't belive that the BB doesn't have irda! Many of us have Harmony's or similar and the BB really doesn't fit well into a one remote setup. Any rescue plans for a USB adapter addon?
flag this
avneron
yes, you'll be able to use a standard USB IR dongle to support universal remotes, but i really hope you'll just fall in love with the Boxee Remote :)

I'm using an Acer Aspire Revo running Ubuntu (32 bit, though I tried 64 bit and had the same issue). I have both XBMC and Boxee installed, and have noticed that videos (particularly streaming videos) play much smoother under XBMC than Boxee. Will future versions of Boxee have smoother playback under Ubuntu?

And while on the subject, do you have any recommendation for a particular Linux distribution (and 32 or 64 bit version) for running Boxee on a Revo? I've been looking at the new ElementOS (@ www.elementmypc.com) but it is so new that even though it supposedly has a "10 foot interface" I'm not sure it's polished enough yet to actually be usable (particularly since a post on their support forum says you can't use a remote control to switch between programs, which I'd sort of think would be the whole point of something like that). Which Linux OS version do you use when developing new versions of Boxee?
flag this
avneron
We have not experienced this issue, but haven't done a qualitative comparison with XBMC for a while, given that the codebase on that front is pretty close. We'll look into it.

Boxee is supported on Ubuntu Linux, latest two general availability revisions at any given time (so currently, Jaunty and Karmic). On our forums, http://forums.boxee.tv, you may find builds to other distros. Fedora is pretty popular.

First of all thank you very much for answering our questions!!!

I am planning on streaming content over 802.11n. How will caching for local content be handled? Will I be able to increase the cache size? For example if I want the box to use the SD card for caching?

Thanks again for your time!
flag this
avneron
the caching size varies. it should support smooth streaming of up to 1080p streams. we don't have a setting to manually control the cache size, but it's a good idea to give the user control over it.

D-link Remote Hardware question:
Will the remote have a screen to allow audio browsing without having to turn on the tv/screen/monitor?
(squeezeboxesque)
I'm on the verge of getting a squeezebox but am wondering if this wonder machine can take its place.
flag this
avneron
the current version of the remote does not include a screen. would have been a great feature to have. it doesn't have a screen due to budget issues.

Big boxee fan. I plan on having a network of them at home. Any plans on being able to network boxee devices so that they can stream/broadcast similar to sonos players? Maybe a "boxee server"? Would be cool to watch a video in the living room while having it also play in the bedroom.

PS. I also own windows home server...
flag this

:) we currently don't have plans for building Boxee Media Server for the home, but I think it is a good idea

Sorry to many question too little time :)

Will there be a way to show netflix/other subscriptions in the normal tv show and movie lists? I was told netflix asked you guys not to index there stuff. Is there anyway this will happen?

we are talking with Netflix about integrating their show/movie DB into ours. hopefully we'll be able to release it later this year.

Been using Boxee since the beta, and I am very satisfied and exited about the box.

1. Any news about swedish and norwegian content. Almost every channel here in Sweden have content on the web. (Plex is one step ahead here. Maybe the only step... :))

2. Will content from the apps be able to show up in the queue? Like diggnation or a TV episode from a TV channel app?
flag this
This post has been deleted.
avneron
1. we don't know the Swedish market.. guess we will depend on users to build these apps. know any developers who will be interested to build Swedish Apps?

2. yes. we are opening up the Queue API, so it will be easier for App Developers to send stuff into the Queue

How quickly does the BB startup? It would be annoying to the kids and wife if it takes a few minutes to startup, especially when I had xbmc on the original xbox startup in less than 10 seconds. Perhaps things like standby/suspend is used.

Speaking of standby, does the OS support spinning down connected harddrives from a defined period of activity or when the BB itself goes into standby?
flag this
avneron
we will have a standby mode that would make for quick start-up time.
not sure how much time the initial boot will take.

2010 looks like it is gonna be a great year for Boxee. What are you most excited about in the coming year and what were the most exciting Boxee happenings from 2009 for you?
flag this
avneron
yes. we had a good start for 2010.

to me the most exciting stuff is still the product. improving the experience coming up with new features and getting the feedback from the users. we're spending the time now stabilizing the Beta version, but have lots of new stuff that will come out this year.

2009 was a year in which we've learned a lot about how our users use and want to use Boxee, and how the industry views what we are doing. hopefully 2010 will be about implementing some of these lessons.

What's the score on the social focus? Two points.

One: We went from a horizontal feed of recommended content from connected Boxee friends in the Alpha to a vertical feed in the Beta. This is a good start, but it misses 99% of the content my friends and family are watching, because for whatever reason they don't use Boxee to watch it. For example, I see a lot of YouTube videos at work or on the go, which I'm not going to fire up Boxee to watch. I think my friends and family operate the same way. We _happen_ upon content and consume it wherever we happen to find it.

Deeper integration with other authentication systems (Google, OpenID, Facebook Connect, etc.) could allow users to feed into Boxee bidirectionally, which helps everyone.

Two: Intra-Boxee communication. Netflix on the Xbox has this great but worthless "Party" idea. The premise is that you synchronize watches with your friends and hit 'play' all at the same time. It's novel but completely impractical. But. What if you could see a (ala Xbox) a friends list, with a status message including their online presence and what they're watching (privacy concerns controlled). You can then drill down to see what they watched in the past, or if the content is available either online (Hulu, Netflix, ABC, etc..) or stored locally you can join them at the same point in the content where the friend is now. The tight integration from One would make it easy to communicate either over Boxee or across AIM, Yahoo, GChat to enrich the experience.
flag this
avneron
we will rollout the integration with Facebook and Twitter into the feed soon. it makes a big difference in terms of exposing you to what your friends are watching. I agree that tighter integration with the authenticated services is required.

we didn't invest much in the social aspects of Boxee in the Beta release. we were focused on user experience changes. more social stuff will come out later this year.

the xbox netflix party system I don't think anyone uses.... me and my roommate tried it in the same dwelling and it was fine. had a emoticon system to express your thoughts on the movie (even though you have headsets). plus it puts the movie in a cartoon theater which is a little annoying since the movie is shrunk down to accommodate. I thought netflix party would be a cool way to watch movies with friends or loved ones who have moved away, but since everyone must have xbox live gold and a subscription to netflix it usually fails before launch. I think it would be cool for a party to have a movie playing in multiple rooms at the same time but thats just the a/v nerd in me... people usually do that with sonos and music anyway, not movies...

If I have an AppleTv running Boxee is there a reason to get a Boxee Box?

Boxee runs much better on the Boxee Box. The UI is snappier, the video playback is smoother (and supports HD), so the overall experience is much better.

Hey, Avner.
How much work went into the design process of the Boxee Box? It's one of the most creatively designed HTPC I've ever seen.

it was done by Astro Studios in San Francisco. small, but extremely talented group.
they worked on it together with D-Link and us for a few months.

I think you guys need to get a podcast thing going in Boxee. Alongside Apps, you could have a Podcast app that lets you subscribe to podcasts without the need for separate applications. This would make it really easy for people to subscribe to, say, CNET Live shows that don't show up in the CNET app.

What do you think?

two more questions for you :).

1. are there any plans to bring israeli content to boxee? do you know of any israeli content that will stream legally to the US?

2. i know you have answered some iPad questions already. What are the ideas you have been throwing around since the announcment? I know personally I have thought the iPad would be great as an extension to boxee (show movie info, character info, have a dvd type menu for extras while its playing etc.)

thanks!
flag this
avneron
1. i assume you live in the US, right? our team in TLV has actually done some work on this front. it should be made available soon. there is the Israeli Channel that streams lots of Israeli shows using RayV. you should check it out.

2. i think it could be a great companion as well as a consumption device. the latter will be harder to get done, but as a companion we have lots of ideas (for both the iPad and the iPhone), we just need to see when we can get around to doing something about these ideas :)

Hi Avner, thanks for answering question here, I have 2:

1. I know Boxee supports Netflix, but will it support streaming Netflix HD? On the Boxee Box or on Windows?

2. Currently, MTV.com shows like Jersey Shore are not available under TV Shows. Are there plans to add MTV shows from MTV.com?

1. Netflix HD is only supported on CE devices, so hopefully the Boxee Box will have Netflix in HD

2. yes. should be coming soon.

I can see that through all of the talk, Amazon Video on Demand has yet to be brought up. Do you guys have any plans to integrate Amazon Video on Demand into the program?

I enjoy watching movies, but I don't get DRM free movies. I don't know where to go to get them. I have downloaded movies in iTunes, but can only watch them there. (Do you guys see getting iTunes protected content like TV Shows and Movies working?) Amazon movies can't be watched when downloaded, either. Only in the browser could they be viewed in Boxee.

And I am really wanting to watch movies in Boxee. I would love to see Boxee integrate Amazon VOD in some way as to allow for me to purchase and/or rent movies, watch my movies in HD (if HD is available) and so on.

Do you guys have plans to allow Amazon integration?
flag this
avneron
we would love to have Amazon VOD on Boxee. we will try to work with Amazon to make it happen as soon as possible.

i don't think we will ever be able to support iTunes purchased movies and tv shows, unless they license out their DRM (or DRM goes away, which will be better).
flag this
TheSweeney
yeah. I really don't care for iTunes except for music and podcasts, which are DRM free.

However, I could see me strictly using Amazon VOD to buy/rent movies if it was integrated in Boxee. Then I could watch them on my computer and my netbook. I would love to be able to buy and rent movies in the app as well.

Also, I think you guys need to get a podcast thing going in Boxee. Alongside Apps, you could have a Podcast app that lets you subscribe to podcasts without the need for separate applications. This would make it really easy for people to subscribe to, say, CNET Live shows that don't show up in the CNET app.

is there an option (or possible to create one, either on your end on in my keymap xml) for there to be a button that brings up the floating menu no matter where I am? Sometimes I am buried deep in my filesystem and just want to go to tv shows without going home first.

sorry to post the same question again but I don't seem to find an answer anywhere:
I created a boxee app, a skin app, with the descriptor.xml and the main.xml... some tags etc. and some Python here and there to enhance functionality...
is there a where to run/install the same app on XBMC without re-writing the app? as far as I understand XBMC only runs scripts right? does it install apps like Boxee? is there an XBMC apps repository?
flag this
avneron
XBMC handles Apps a bit differently. I think you'll need to create an XBMC plug-in, but you'll need to make some changes to the way the app works.

you can contact idan [at] boxee [d0t] tv to have a more elaborate discussion about the differences (there are many)

Did a little mistake and clicked "answer" in stead of just posting a new comment. So I'll copy it in here so there is a chance it gets seen... Sorry!

Just set up Boxee on my wifes computer running Kubuntu. I managed (at last) after A LOT of work to get an MCE USB remote to work, and during that, learned a lot about the lirc system...

BUT - would it not be a natural thing to have as part of the Boxee setup? So that you could practically pick up ANY remote as long as you have an IR receiver, and have a settings part for remote where Boxee would prompt you to press buttons on the remote and do the rest for you?

Today, there is setup for the screen and for audio. I would say a remote is a vital part of the user experience and deserves it's own section...?

Apart from that - Boxee it absolutely awsome. Easy to run and it really works.

One more thing - can we please get a PPA so that the updates will come in automatically for all Ubuntu based distros?
flag this
avneron
as you have mentioned yourself, getting a remote to work on Ubuntu may not be so trivial (in some cases it is, in other.. ouch). It is for exactly this reason we can't "just make it work".

that said, we are targeting the upcoming Boxee Remote, to be supported, out of the box, with any OS Boxee is available on.

regarding PPA - it is not that trivial, unfortunately. we are constantly making fixes so boxee continues to work on 2 releases of Ubuntu at any given time.

There have been several questions on the forums. I thought I'd toss them out:

1) A user has request for back-lighting the remote for dark conditions. Any possibility of future features? Some argue that it would be a cheap addition to the remote.
http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=14802

2) What external hardrive formats the boxee box support? XFS, FAT32, NTFS, etc. Any possibility of the Boxee Box rejecting particular HD formats?
http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=15808

3) Some have kids in the family. Any possibility of Boxee adding features allowing parents to password protect the settings screen?
http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=15544
flag this
avneron
1) backlight will not be supported with this remote. but..

2) fat32, ntfs, ext2/3 for sure, and we are looking at adding additional fs support as well (HFS+ for example)

3) sounds like a good feature. we need to explore how to make Boxee more kids-safe and kids-friendly

Boxee seems to be built for the streaming and playing what we already own. Will the Boxee Box be able to download content as well as stream it? Will it support http downloads and torrents for example. Will third party developers be able to build this for the Boxee box if you're not going to do it natively.

most services seem to be transitioning towards streaming from the cloud, but we have no bias towards downloadable media. there is nothing in the Boxee software that limits developers from building download services. regardless of the download protocol.
