I've purchased this item not long than a week ago and found that this site is misleading it's information, I have found that this item doesn't…

have the facilitys of a FTP, nor can you host it as a webserver, I have tried to find out if Iomega had a firmware that was able to do this, but had no luck, I had the latest one on it, I was very disapointed to that as this is purley what I really wanted it for, to add a usb device and host it on the net like a hard drive, maybe they might come out with a firmware in the near future that will allow this, pray to god.

I haven't tested out the printer server feature as I have already have a network printer, secondly, the other features such as a usb hard drive or usb memory stick device to put in does recongise it instantly and will appear on your laptop without any configuration, one of the major downsides that I found was the networking itself, such as losing connection to the network, but I found that this problem maybe due to the workgroup name, I suggestion, if you have experience this problem where you can connect via network drive, but not through the webpage itself for example http://192.168.0.64, or the wireless ip, I would suggestion you change your workgroup name from your current one or default "mshome" to "WORKGROUP", this may fix the problem.

The torrent file does what it says, however, you must enable port forwarding, if you don't how to do this, please research it, i'm not going to explain as i may ramble on that you may not understand it, look up the idiots guide to port forwarding, i had to.

However, with the torrent feature, only allows 1 download at a time, though you setup the bandwidth for the upload and download, it still really isn't that fast and the feature to not allow more than 1 download at a time doesn't help if you just want to get things done.

You have the ability to share your media which is on your usb device, it scans your usb device for all the media such as all the movies, watch them on your laptop, iphone or any wireless mp4, even your gaming console like a PS3 or Xbox 360, for ps3 users, they can download the movies from the network hard drive and put them on their own.

Back up and restore feature, I have never tried this, but I have come accross complaints regarding to this option from people who have experience a lot of errors, it suppose to allow you to copy 1 usb device to another, like your hard drive to another hard drive from a touch of a button, as said, I haven't tried this yet, I just tell you what I read.

Search, you can search the entire device/s from a quick link search engine, don't know what that's all about, maybe it's just to make things easier to find your files or something, I normally use my own computer do that via through the network drive.

Remote access works fine, however, once again port forwarding is involved, as you will find if your router has a automatic firewall, you have to allow inbound and outbound to the ip along with the port forwarding, some routers are setup with this feature, but not mine, I had to configure this myself, knowing what I was doing as I use to host my site from my computer, you will not be able to access your hard drive remotely away from your network until port forwarding is setup, take that in mind.

Remote access viewing is a http website, it's layed out poorly like a chimp made webiste, the files are in front of you, but if you want to download them, you have to use the save as link, to open them, you have to click on them, not really fun if you ask me.

This is one of the reason why you should have ftp on this thing, to allow you access via ftp setup on your my computer to access remotely without the need of viewing a stupid webpage, but viewing them as like a standard folder on your desktop.

I paid £69.99 from PC World for this crap and it's practually used as a paper weight, not at all interesting than what you can purchase on ebay for less than £29.99, a great disapointment indeed, Iomega should be ashamed of themself for over charging for this rubbish.

I'm just saying this, it's no big deal to go rushing into the store to buy this thing as you can buy something for practually half the price that will proberly do something better than this.

The staff at Iomega are just get lazy with their work if you ask me.

Thanks for sharing your impressions Markhornyuk. In general I've got to say I've never been overly impressed with iomega since the zip disk. Lots of 'close but not quite' products.

I'm a little confused though: you say at the start of your post that you "nor can you host it as a webserver", then at the end you say "Remote access viewing is a http website". Aren’t those two statements contradictory?

I took a quick look through the published iomega specs, and the manual for the device, and I can't see anything about FTP in it. Unless someone can verify that you can in fact access files via FTP I think that spec should be pulled from it's list.

My personal advice for people wanting a NAS is always gdgt.com/microsoft/windows/home-server/ I am now running the beta of the next version of WHS, so consider this advice from a fanboy. To get bittorrent running I installed utorrent as a service, and got it to monitor a folder for .torrent files. WHS's major weakness is lack of OSx support, although I hear that new versions are supposed to fix that (and get you coffee as well :) )

Anyway.. thanks again for posting that. I would like to say it's changed my opinion of iomega products, but it hasn't really. It stays at "Too focused on making it simple for new users to make it useful"

The specs are stated on GDGT website and some other sites, as Download clients:
BitTorrent, HTTP, "FTP", which is wrong, ftp is not featured on this device, when I said, remote access viewing is a http website, I ment by that is, accessing it remote from any computer, but through an iomega html webpage which was design by them, you see them all as a list, you can't move them, nor rename them, just delete them, and you have to rightclick to save file as to download them onto your pc, you can upload only by a simple dumb looking html file uploader, so when you see something like "HTTP:" you expect to be able to host your files like a webserver, without the need of loggin in, for example, upload index.html, and go to http://192.168.0.7/index.html you should get a webpage, instead of "404 error" or a pop-up saying you must log in to the Iomega iconenct, which means, if I want to share this with strangers without letting them access my personal hard drive, I have to attached a second usb storage device and setup a username and password to access that storage device which is only feature it would allow me to do, I can set them as read only, so they can't delete anything, but I would rather, just upload the html files, then let them access it as a website without loggin on the time, just access it like a webpage, many sites are saying you can do this, I don't know if this was the intention of Iomega by misleading the sites, or the sites over speculating, I don't want to connect pc up, or do to much configuration, I just want something that connects via through the router, and host it as a website with the feature of ftp so that I can access it through ftp program when i'm at home or away, as said this product is a dispointment and better off being a paperweight, anymore questions, just ask, but you have to understand where i'm coming from if you had product that is, and I wouldn't recommend buying this, because you may end up smashing it like i nearly did :P

I've updated the product page, not sure why it was listed as such, but occasionally a product is announced with certain features and gets inputted into the database that way only to see some features removed at launch. Regardless, I'm really sorry for your frustration here.

If you're in the market for a new router you could pick up the NetGear WNR3500L Open-Source router. It's about 80 bucks, has a four-port gigabit switch (no jumbo frames support, I'm afraid), Wireless N connectivity and a USB port to connect your mass-storage device. I bought it, and parked my router and USB HDD on a shelf in my closet. Now I can turn off the PC that was hosting all of the media and save some bucks on power!

Have to agree with markhorneyuk, what I wanted / expected is a hard drive that could be accessed remotely. Or at the very least be able to Upload to it remotely.

Now the question: do I return it while I still can, or wait for someone to please hack it so it's usable? As it is the Iconnect is just a $55 dollar paper weight.
