I've configured my vanilla Buffalo NAS (With SMB Share) to work with my Mac over WiFi.

I've followed the instructions here:

Been using it now for a few weeks with few issues.

nice. i had the time capsule, but didn't appreciate the speed. i used it on my imac, and my windows/ubuntu laptops.

After a few months from this however, sometimes Time Machine on my PC suddenly thinks that my remote backup is inconsistent, and requests to start over. After I restart it and it re-creates the backup, nothing works again and I have to start over.

A better solution I have found for myself is that I used my spare media server Mac Mini, and loaded it with Lion Server (which has the feature to act as a Time Machine server). This has works MUCH better for me... especially with backing up two machines on the same volume.

Just a note, my Mac mini is a teensy one. It was the first Intel one to be released. Core (One) Solo 1.5Ghz. I've replaced the CPU manually to a Core 2 Duo 1.8Ghz and maxed the memory ro 2G. I was actually able to get Lion and Lion Server installed on it by removing the main-board check file (since I know it would work).

I also run a Airfoil Server (Airplay destination) on it and it is my primary TV server (connected to a overhead projector). It handles the load pretty well backing up a new iMac and a old Macbook all at the same time.

Best investment ever.
