Discussion about
I've been thinking about getting one of these for a while. I've got a Windows 7 desktop PC, a Macbook Pro, and an Xbox 360.
I need to be able to back up the desktop and MBP (preferably with Time Machine on the MBP) and stream video to both computers and my Xbox. Can anyone tell me if this device will work with all those needs?
The MBP backup is feasible, but you have to create a special .sparsebundle file (see directions here appleclinic.wordpress.com/2008/10/30/time-machine-...). Backing up is reasonably straightforward once you get it going, but if you put your MBP to sleep while it is backing up, the server file corrupts and you have to redo your entire backup. Also, I'm uncertain about how feasible/easy it is to perform a full system restore using an 'unsupported' server system like the H340. I'd look into that aspect thoroughly before relying fully on this setup for MBP backup. I think the streaming will work reasonably well for you provided your network and computer network connections are solid (preferably gigabit and/or wireless N).
