I tried to run the vmdk file using Vmware workstation 7 but it doesn't work. I am told to open the .
vmx file instead, but that isn't included in the download...
I had the same issue - I created a new VM in different directory and chose to add the OS later. Then I opened the VM settings, removed the existing HDD and added a new one mapped to the existing chrome .vmdk file - works!
.vmdk file is a VMware Workstation/Player harddisk image file.
.vmx file is the configuration file of a VMware virtual machine, created using VMware Workstation.
My experience with Chrome OS download was this, they only supplied a .vmdk file. All you need to do is to create a new VMware virtual machine with VMware Workstation by reusing the supplied .vmdk file as the harddisk.

Have you tried using Virtual Box ( www.virtualbox.org/ ) instead? You can install the file you downloaded from gdgt using that software.
Another alternative is to go with something like the Chrome OS builds by Hexxeh. Either way, let us know how things go for you. Keep in mind that the build we offer up for download is in the pre-alpha stage.
