I remember reading somewhere online that, in order to understand the power and draw of the iPad, you needed to hold one.

So I went with a friend to our local Apple store and we asked if we could look at an iPad. Now, at this point my friend had already used one and was convinced that I would be AMAZED at the amazing speed and seamless ease of it. So, they brought it to me, I held it, used it for about 15 minutes, all the while my friend was staring to me while I used it constantly repeating Steve Jobs' tag lines to me. At the end the employee came back, looked a me in the eyes and said, "So, what'cha think buddy?" What I thought was that it was really just a giant iPod Touch, I thought it was slow and glitchy, I thought it stuttered and I thought it was very underwhelming. So, what did I say?
I said, "it's nice".

I realize this reaction from me was mostly my fault for believing the hype, but I couldn't help feeling a little disappointed in this case.

So what I'm really getting to here is:

Anyone else here had an underwhelming experience the first time they handled an iPad? I'm really interested in hearing why you were underwhelmed with the device. And please, keep the flames out.

Yeah I'm not sure what you found slow and glitchy. The experiences I've had with it offer really smooth transitions and apps. It's a nice device, but one that I can't justify buying.

What bugs did you run into? What apps ran slowly?

loading Netflix was slow, loading CBS in Safari was slow. Loading the App store was slow. Zooming in and out made it stutter. I'm not saying the experience was negative, but it was underwhelming, specially for the price range.

some pages loaded slowly when I was in the apple store too, but that had way more to do with 100 people trying to use the wireless at one time.... The apps themselves loaded quite fast...

Keep in mind that you are using a chip clocked at 1GHz and using a limited amount of RAM while attempting to load websites with a lot of multimedia content. I havent run into the same issues but I would imagine it's a combo of hardware limitations, poor optimization, and completely overloaded in-store internet.

I'll admit I was a little underwhelmed the first time I played with one in an apple store. I too had bought into the hype and found myself thinking that it truly was just a big iPod touch.

Flash forward one month and I find myself being given one as a birthday gift. Now after a few weeks I find myself in love with it. The more I use it the more I love it, the iPad is becoming my favoret way to surf the web. The one thing the iPad gives you over any device I have ever used is it's speed to get started. I can pick it up and be online in a matter of seconds. It's size and weight makes it perfect just to carry around the house with you and toss it on the couch as you watch tv.

Now all of this said I don't think this device is going to be for everyone it dose not do everything, in fact it's not going to do most things a computer will do but it is not a computer. The things it dose do though it dose incredibly well and at the end of the day if you stop comparing it to a computer and start looking at it as it's own cartigory of device you see just how much it can do. The price like almost all apple products is high but I hope as time goes on the price will go down. My suggestion is that if your on the fence and you really not sure if you want to get one go ahead and get it and try it out, you always have two weeks to return it if you can't find a way to fit it into your life.

the only thing underwhelming to me was the price of entry.... same with the ipod touch and iphone... that aside, I loved the experience and nothing felt glitchy at all. The "HD" apps looked and played great and the time I spent in Pages was very positive. The keyboard could be a tiny bit better, but overall its still great.

My biggest worry now is reading about all the Wi-Fi issues and wondering if it would work properly in my home and the hotspots I frequent...

If you are looking for something to be underwhelmed about, you could point to the "what do I do with this thing aspect?". It doesn't do a ton, but what it does do it does well and fast. I would snatch one up for about $200, but for more than double that I can wait until I get this as a new toy.....
