I recently purchased this lens and I'm very happy with it. I bought it on Amazon for about $120.
It forces you to carefully compose your shots hopefully making you a better photographer. Very fast, sharp focus and pretty good in low light situations highly recommended for the price.
Love this lens! It was one of the first I picked up for my DSLR as well (and SLRs) as well.
What camera body are you shooting with? I shoot with a D300, so the APS-C sensor crops the image so that the lens is equivalent to ~75mm, which is a little too tight for my tastes. That said, this is still an excellent lens and I've gotten some killer shots with it!
