I picked up the Virgin Mobile MiFi 2200 over the weekend. I was not about to get locked into any sort of a contract with VZW.

So far, the device has worked exceptionally well. Coverage in my area's been really good.

I've found that these are pretty difficult to find in stores and online. I ended up finding mine at a Walmart in a more rural area. At $149.99 they aren't cheap, but it's mine - and being able to pay when I feel like using it more than awesome.

My plan is to most likely switch to Unlimited ($40/mo) and downgrade the data plan on my iPhone to $15/mo. This ends up being only $10 more expensive per month than having the 2Gb Data Pro plan for iPhone ($25) + Tethering ($20).

Nice! I'd really like one of these and they are crazy hard to find right now. Who is your normal mobile phone provider? Does the MiFi seem to have coverage in places your normal phone doesn't?

I only ask this since I'm on AT&T and am looking for a device to supplement my mobile coverage (and hoping the Virgin Mobile / Sprint are available in places where AT&T doesn't exist here in San Francisco).

Any reason you'd prefer this over Sprint's Overdrive (which has 4G)? I've yet to find a dead spot in San Francisco proper with my Sprint device. If I didn't already have the Evo with its tethering capabilities (3G/4G) I would definitely pick up an Overdrive.

Looking into this, I think it was price / contract options.

MiFi via Virgin Mobile was $40 / month and no contract.
Sprint Overdrive is $60 / month with 2 year contract.
