I'm thinking of replacing my iPad w/Retina display with this

I like the 7" form factor better. I've always felt like the iPad was just a little too big. Android seems to be getting more awesome at a quicker pace than iOS. Plus, I can probably sell my iPad for a lot more than $200 and make a profit. The only things that concern me are how the display will compare to the retina display on the iPad, and the fact that a lot of major apps are iOS first or even iOS only. I wish they were being sold at Best Buy or somewhere so that I could play around with one a little before I bought it.

Anyone else here have an iPad and thinking of getting this? Or trying to decide between this and an iPad? Which way are you leaning?

Maybe some folks who are getting these at Google IO will be able to provide their two cents but based on my experience with the Kindle Fire I don't find that screen size that compelling compared to the iPad. I realize that the Nexus 7 is much better than the Kindle Fire so I am not talking about the underlying specs but more the form factor itself.

It is a bit easier to carry around but it is still not as pocketable as a smartphone. As far as usability whether it be apps or web browsing, the 7" size is a strange middle ground between the ever growing Android phones and the iPad with it actually getting closer to the phones like the Note in terms of size and resolution.

I would say that 7" is probably best for media consumption particularly 720P video although the storage limitations and WiFi only may put somewhat of damper on that. It may also potentially be good as an e-reader but it remains to be seen if they can provide a decent magazine reading experience (the Kindle Fire doesn't).

Also, based on what I have been reading from Google, they seem to be against tablet specific apps so the apps that take advantage of the tablet's larger screen may continue to be limited. Of course, only time will tell on that one.

i would say wait before you make the Jump.
at the 200 or 250 price range i bet some one you know will pick one up and then you can compare them and decide for yourself.

i have the iPad 3 and i have ordered the Nexus 7. i also really like the 7inch form factor.
I like the smaller size at its easier to cary around but i have not been all the impressed with app selection for tablets and think or at least it feels like there are more on the iPad side of the house.

Either way i am looking forward to getting my hands on the device and i am hoping this will replace my kindle.

I was actually looking at the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0. It also has a seven inch screen, it has dual cameras, 8 GB of internal storage with sd card slot for up to 32GB more. 1GHz dual core processor, and even an IR blaster for controlling your tv with your SGT 2 7.0. It is $50 more, but I think it is better than the Nexus 7. It curently runs on Android 4.0 (ice cream sandwich) but will probably get an update soon. From what I know, the Nexus 7 only has one camera and it can only be used for video chatting. There is no camera app. Nexus 7 does have better screen resolution than SGT 2 7.0, but whatever you choose, I think you will like. I agree with you. I like the 7 inch screen better.

I have the New iPad and I got to play with the I/O (white back) version of the Nexus 7 for four hours over the weekend. I ordered one immediately. Since the Nexus 7 is so affordable, I'd say keep them both. You'll notice two things right away that startle you.

1) When viewing HD video, it's about the exact same size between the tablets because of the weird iPad 4:3 display.

2) Things look better on the Nexus 7 screen because it's brighter, has better color, and better contrast.

3) The difference in PPI is minimal to the naked eye unless you hold them 7 inches away. You honestly just can't tell the difference.

And you will freak out like I did and mess with the brightness setting on your New iPad because you won't trust your eyes. It's a little annoying actually. It's also looking like 200ppi for a tablet is more than enough. That seems to be the "doesn't matter anymore" threshold. I keep that in mind when see reviewers claim otherwise now. Because of that, I know not to trust reviews from Anantech, CNet, and engadget anymore.

I've got the 3rd-gen iPad, and am also thinking about getting the Nexus 7. For the price, it's almost impossible to pass up. I too like the 7" form factor better than the larger iPad, but I'm afraid that once I start using the Nexus, I'll more or less abandon my iPad. I suppose your point is a good one that I could always sell my iPad and make a profit. All of the apps I use are available for both iOS and Android (not necessarily in tablet form, but those apps don't necessarily have to be).

Decisions decisions... Ah, who am I kidding? For $200, I can't pass up the Nexus.
