I know the Boxee Box is getting USB ports, so if I had a USB dvd drive that works with most flavors of linux is there a chance Boxee will autodetect and be able to use it?

are the scrapers for tvshows/movies going to be updated more frequently when this device is issued? currently there are sometimes day delays from a show being available and showing in boxee.

can you give me an example?

current one i know of is lost. last weeks tuesday episode is not showing in the boxee tv shows, but is available on hulu/abc. usually it shows up next day on hulu/abc and then a day later shows up on boxee, but this time it failed to show up at all.

will it be open source ? can someone add a plugin to it ? Will plugins be 100% compatible with XBMC?

the Boxee client software is open-source and based on GPL. we will also try to make it easy for users to install additional software packages on the device. #1 priority in that regard is to enable XBMC.

Besides the Boxee Box what other set top boxes/PCs would you recommend to run Boxee?

i would recommend Mac Mini for Mac and Acer Revo for PC.

How about the Neuros LINK?

1. Does it have a uPnP client? (Thinking of running PlayOn on a PC to stream Netflix that way)

2. Can I add video RSS feeds manually? I watch a lot of video podcasts.

1. yes.

2. yes. we are building a new RSS app for Boxee that is going to make it real easy.

Thanks! I'm looking forward to replace my aging Xbox1. Also, being able to run XBMC is icing on the cake ;-)

I know you're building your own, but you should check out feedly for RSS integration, might be interesting to work with them.

Are you planning to let the scraper search the "also known as" of the imdb database? this would greatly improve the experience in non-english countries.

If I hook up an External HDD to the Boxee Box will it have the ability to share that drive to the network? (Ex: Move my shared external library from being connected to my Mac to being connected to Boxee in order to not have to stream local media?)

avneron

yes. you'll be able to connect an external drive using USB and see it on your local network like any other drive.

Too bad no estata support for some large library devices like the Drobo S.

will users have root access to the box?

not out of the Box.. apps running on Boxee may be able to get limited root access.

I've been using Boxee since early in the Alpha, and the Beta is SO much better...except for one thing. When are you adding back in the ability to edit/control the metadata that gets pulled? My local files are completely screwed up because Boxee is pulling the wrong info. We're talking things like "Ass Aliens" for the movie "Aliens"...try explaining _that_ mistake to your wife. Battlestar Galactica will NOT resolve correctly, etc.

Yes, I have read all the "rename your files properly" stuff. It's just tons easier to fix it manually, especially when you have TV shows involved.

i was bummed that we broke this feature in the Beta, but it is coming back with a vengeance in our next build. it will be a much more powerful and easy-to-use feature.

That's awesome....any clue when that's being released? Can't wait to fix my library....

Will the new metadata editor on the Box be able to include items that aren't from the scraper at all? I have a large collection of networked home movies that we'd love to be able to browse and watch - with correct metadata - in the living room.

that sounds like a great feature - right now not on our plate. you can of course access all your files, sans the meta data, using the file browser in boxee

I've been doing this via shortcuts, and hacking a "friendly name" for the networked folder in the Boxee XML file. I guess my real question here is whether the new version will support arbitrary user-inputted metadata for media directly in Boxee itself (that is, enter the metadata in Boxee, not pull it from the files themselves). Sorry to harp on this one - it's the dealbreaker feature for my family :)

i understand the feature request. i would likely use it, too. will check on where it is on the roadmap.

This may be a software question, but will i be able to hook up an HD tuner (over USB) and use it?

avneron

it is indeed a software question. we have not done work on supporting OTA tuners, there is some work being done on it by the community, but not by us. we may be able to get to it in 2010. not sure, yet.

It would be so sweet if there is an interface to a network tuner like silicondust's current hdhomerun and their upcoming version for cablecards. But then there is the big requirement for supporting a TV Guide. If boxee can open Windows Media Center files, can access remote tuners with Guide support, and have a client to interface to a Media Center host to schedule recordings, then I wouldn't really need Media Center extenders and never have to look at the Media Center host directly.

yes. it is a big one for us. support for old teevee feed, guide, etc. lots of user experience implications.

Boxee , is there anywhere you've published the story behind your logo ?

avneron

i don't think so.
what would you like to know?

i vaguely remember someone telling a story about how the design for the logo came about at the Webster Hall meet-up last year, but i can't remember now - was just curious!

it was designed by a company named Method in SF.
we wanted something that will be personable, related to media, something with a twist.

people see different things when looking at the logo: a frog, a monkey, an old video camera, the letter 'B'. all are right.

they called the design punched-eye boxee.

What sort of HD video can the Boxee Box handle? Perhaps 1080p MKV?
0 like dislike
avneron

we are working on making all popular formats work on the box, but don't have final spec on specific format support

badbob001

I would love for boxee to fully support Windows Media Center formats, including embedded show information and subtitle/closed captioning tracks. But perhaps that is more an issue with Mplayer than Boxee?

booticon

I guess my question is more regarding the bitrate and resolution that the Box can handle. I know that Boxee already plays MKV.

avneron

yes. we're still trying to push the platform to see what it can do.

Launch Date for Boxee Remote..??

no final date for the remote, but D-Link is aiming to bring it out even before the Box will come out

What is Boxee's current relationship status with YouTube? Didn't they have a crackdown on unlicensed devices that connect to youtube? I would love for boxee to be able to login into my youtube account to access private videos, playlists, subscriptions, but the current interface doesn't support that. I wonder if it has anything to do with licensing.

we have a good relationship with YouTube. we will work with them to provide a better YouTube experience on Boxee.

Will I be able to hook up the Boxee Box to an old television set via some kind of USB Video Adapter?
