Discussion about
I'm looking to cancel my cable tv subscription and moving to streaming from the internet. I was considering either Roku, Apple TV, or possible PS3.
My tv is rather old(CRT) and I was wondering if I would run into issues with these devices?
If you're watching on a CRT I am going to guess that you want the overall cheapest option...
Roku is probably the best option. It is cheaper up front, however with Apple TV you have the ability to cancel Netflix (or not have a subscription to begin with) and rent tv shows and movies for only a few dollars here and there. You can also stream stuff from your Itunes (digital copies of movies, home movies, music, etc). Within a year or so I believe Apple TV will have an optional controller to play Iphone-like games on your tv. If you watch sports at all, stick with your cable.
Personally I have an HDTV with DirecTV(I am a football nut) and a PS3 so it's not like I can give you advice from direct experience. If you want to do some gaming and would like a blu-ray player, the PS3 is the best $300 you will spend. A PS3 will hook up to your TV no problem. However, that's assuming you are in the market for an HDTV.
It comes down to 3 things:
Q.Are you willing to spend the $$ to get a great experience?
If yes, go PS3 (you can still stream music, movies, etc to the tv from your computer with the PS3) and HDTV. I would not recommend a PS3 if you don't have a HDTV. Having your gaming device being more expensive than your tv seems a little crazy to me.
If no:
Q. Do you love Netflix or would rather put your trust into Itunes?
If Netflix, you can save money with Roku. The Roku does have other channels like MLB, UFC, Pandora, Amazon, Hulu+ and a bunch of movie renting and social channels that I really don't know much about. Roku can connect to anything.
If Itunes, go Apple TV. It is very portable (think hockey puck) and some shows really are only $1 and you can still play Netflix and Youtube on it. The Apple TV seems best if you don't watch much tv, but are very picky about what you do watch. I am not sure if you can get audioboooks, apps and free stuff thru the Itunes store on apple tv. You may have an issue connecting it to your CRT now that I see it only has HDMI out...
