I'll be honest, I kind of want to sell my S90 and pickup a LX5.

Why? Nothing more than the irrational desire of wanting something new! But seriously, I hear it's an amazing camera that everyone raves about!

I suppose it depends on whether the things that gotcha me about the LX3 (aka the D-Lux 4) gets you too. These are all physical aspects of the camera that I believe haven't changed with the LX5.

1. Manual flash. Hella annoying to miss a shot because the flash wasn't deployed.
2. Lens cap. *RAGE*
3. Aspect ratio switch: If you shoot HD video, you need to put it into 16:9 format. Now I don't know if this has changed on the LX5, but the aspect ratio covers both video and still - so you need to switch back to 4:3 to get maximum still resolution. If you forget it after shooting HD video, you get odd-res stills and if you shoot standard still and switch to video, you end up shooting SD video.

To me, the D-Lux 4 produced undoubtedly better stills than the S90 in daylight. And apparently, the D-Lux 4 had slightly better images than the LX3 overall - be it better optic coating or just exposure changes.

So you are getting a better camera in terms of image quality - but to me, the S90 is much more usable, and it's really not the smaller size that clinches the deal - the S90 just has better usability, especially for true P&S'ers like me. For a semipro though, the usability annoyances might be worth compromising for the quality.

That said, as I've said before if they Leicafy the LX5, I *might* get back onboard.

Interesting thoughts on this. Yeah, I'd love to get my hands on one to at least play with before throwing down -- like I said, I think it's just some irrational desire I have and it will pass when -- oh, shiny!

Anyway, I think I remember you complaining about the lens c(r)ap before. What's the issue with it?

You just have to manually remove/put back on the lens cap everytime you shoot, like a dslr. Point and shoots don't have to deal with this annoyance. In the end whether you go with the smaller s90/s95 or the lx3/lx5 comes down to your carrying habits. I never planned to keep my camera in my pants' pocket, I either carry it in my jacket pocket or a backpack along with other stuff.

I wouldn't mind taking that S90 off your hands :)

Never mind. I picked up a S90 and it's spectacular...

Well - the issue is that you end up missing shots unless you make taking the lens cap off second nature. With the S90 for example, you hit the power button and it's ready to shoot. With the LX3/DL4, you take the lens cap off before you hit the power button. Because if you don't, you have to wait for it to say 'take lens cap off' then hit a specific arrow key on the d-pad.

It does of course seem simple on paper, but quite often what happens when you want to grab a shot is that you, well, power the camera on first.

You could buy one those automatic lens caps for the LX5 or buy the uv filter add on so you don't have to take off the lens cap.

Yeah I spotted those later but it makes the PanaLeica much uglier for one. For the level of improvement you get (and in e.g. low-light cases, you don't) over the S90, I'd say forget it in any case.
