The unfortunate thing about the 50mm f/1.4 is that it's nearly $500. Yes, you're paying for quality, but for someone with an entry level lens, that's a little steep.
Another option is the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 AF-S.
It's specifically made for DX cameras, so it's 35mm equivalent field of view is ~52mm on a D3100. Basically, this is what your 50mm lens would be seeing if you were on a full frame camera.
It's also a lot cheaper! Around $150 - $200 or so.
