I just got this lens for my D3100.

Note: it does not support autofocus with the D3000/3100

Your D3100 does not have an internal focusing motor, so only AF-S lenses will autofocus on your body.

Which is a shame because the 50mm f/1.8D is a fantastic lens, however the 50mm f/1.4 will focus fine on your camera.

The unfortunate thing about the 50mm f/1.4 is that it's nearly $500. Yes, you're paying for quality, but for someone with an entry level lens, that's a little steep.

Another option is the Nikkor 35mm f/1.8 AF-S.

It's specifically made for DX cameras, so it's 35mm equivalent field of view is ~52mm on a D3100. Basically, this is what your 50mm lens would be seeing if you were on a full frame camera.

It's also a lot cheaper! Around $150 - $200 or so.
