The development community is great, and right now they're working on making a stable 2.3 port. Right now I'm using AOSP's 2.2 ROM and it flies at 768 mhz. I decided to pass up on the EVO, Epic and Shift 4g phones in lieu of the upcoming dual core phones. What's funny is that my phone can run the FPS2D benchmark just as fast (60 fps) or faster than (the EVO at 30 fps capped) those 3 phones.
The only problem I have with the phone is just the lack of internal memory. The RAM at 288 mb is enough for handling most things I throw at it, but I'm just waiting waiting for dual core to come to Sprint. HTC did a great job with our Hero CDMA.

I honestly love this thing. I bought this back in November '09 as my first Android phone. I still use it today.
I have a feeling HTC just strikes a right chord every now and again. I have to say I was happy with my mytouch3g up until a couple weeks ago when I finally gave into temptations of the HTC G2, which is insanely good you don't really care about gaming. The hero seems to have really outlived the myTouch3g all in all, and seems better built.
