Discussion about
i heart iMac
Currently on my 4th iMac, and more than ever the iMac is the ultimate balance of power, design, and value. I just upgraded the hard drive in this one ( see www.amfiteatar.org/content/view/155/57/lang,en/ if interested ) and the machine is fresh and spunky for a nearly 2 year old desktop. I hate to say it but I think Apple's going to have to offer a 30" display option to get me to upgrade again. What do you love about your iMac?
Value?? They're the most expensive PCs on the market!! I can get something with the exact same specs from Dell or HP for about 2/3 the price. And don't tell me that it wouldn't be as good quality, cause if there was any better quality it definately can't be worth an extra 500$
@skittleswrapper Interesting comment. Though I have no interest in debating the relative cost of hardware, I should clarify that my comment on value was meant more as a comparison to other 'like products': mac pro, macbook pro, mac mini, etc. As in, the iMac is both powerful enough to handle big jobs, and priced lower than pro series.
For me, the best OS environment for productivity is OS X
In the absence of a reliable hackintosh that is stable (for more than a few months) and compatible with software /OS updates, one who prefers OS X doesn't have the option to buy discount hardware off the shelf.
So for those to whom the the bottom line is a dollar figure, please enjoy saving money on hardware. I'll continue to enjoy spending it on product satisfaction.

Just came across this comment that I made and looking at it now, I'm not sure why I bothered posting it. I suppose it was immature and definatly flamebait. I also must have miss understood you and I wish I could edit my comment. It even makes me look like a bit of an MSfanboy, but I actually typed it up on an iPod Touch.
no worries. That's what the internet does-- makes us all sound like zealots.
Now that the 27" iMac is out (that has nearly the same resolution as the 30" cinema display) I guess I'll be compelled to upgrade after all...as soon as they start shipping the quad-core version that is.

Way to avoid the flamewar eloquently and respectfully. Your argument is well reasoned and very true - as a graphic artist by trade, the iMac is a wonderfully functional (and stable) machine, in comparison to a PC. I've used both in my current position (started with a custom-built PC, convinced them to buy me a Mac Pro) and I've grown up using Macs. My home computer is an iMac 2.8GHz, same as ttringle, and I LOVE it. The hardware is a piece of art (which YES, is important. More so than skittleswrapper seems to understand) and functions wonderfully with OSX, which is an awesome OS. Not that I don't want to give Windows a chance - 7 looks pretty good, but I think I'll wait and see on that. My macs have several more years before I'll need something newer.
Thanks for making just a little bit more jealous about not having an iMac. I'll be thinking about it on a daily basis all summer as I sit in front of the heat blasting off of my CRT monitor as my Mac Mini gradually gets slower and slower.
I use to be an avid mac hater, but my addiction to cell phones ended all that when i bought the 1st gen iPhone and since have went apple crazy with a iMac 22", a 13" uni body mac book and the next 2 iPhone releases. I have to say the iMac was overly impressive, impressive enough i gave it to a family member when i got the laptop to help spread the apple seed. As much as i hate to admit it... Apple makes a very nice product.
I too recently converted to loving apple products. And coming from a Windows IT person of nearly 20 years thats saying quite a bit. It all started with using iTunes to organize my MP3 collection in Windows. I then broke down and purchased my first iPod and have never looked at another MP3 player since.
Since then, I purchased many ipods, including the nano as an interim replacement for my 20GB when I dropped it. I then moved on to the 80GB video, then got my company to get me an iPod touch 1st gen and currently am trying to finagle my boss into letting me get an iPhone and stop using sprint.
During that time, I've purchased my first mac (and non personally built PC) the last gen 24' iMac 2.8Ghz. Since then when I got my last tax check and needed to get a new Laptop for work I went with the MacBook 15', unfortunately it was 3 months ago and of course they updated them immediately. But that's to be expected with Apple.
I have also purchased an AppleTV as well and are in the process of just having recently cancelled my CableTV so that I can simply purchase TV Show seasons and Movies/rent Movies using the AppleTV and a mixture of Hulu and other online services.
I'm really amazed at how well Apple products are made and just how well apple products get along together. Any Windows user really owes it to himself to take a hard look at the current crop of iMac's and Macbooks as with Bootcamp there is really no excuse to not having your choice of OS for what you need. I think alot of you will find that like me you end up using OS X much more than windows.
