HTC Hero use as a modem for my laptop or PC?

Can I use my HTC Hero, with Sprint as my carrier, as a modem to link with my laptop or pc for web viewing? To explain, I want to view the web on my PC using my Hero as the Modem supply. If you could please explain how to do this so my simple mind can understand.. Thanks!

this is called tethering. the hero is an android device. android supports tethering if you have the app for it.

There's built-in tethering-over-USB on the Hero.

Settings -> Wireless Controls -> Mobile Network Sharing. (scroll all the way down, for this one).

Note: This only works when you've got the USB-cable connected AND HTC Sync installed on your Windows PC.

Alternatively, you could root/flash your phone, in order to run unauthorized apps, which need root privileges.

When I enabled Mobile Network Sharing, I started getting "vision user/password wrong" popups every time it would use a connection, without even having a PC connected to it.

I tried PDANet, which worked, but if I could make it work without paying for PDANet or running extra apps, it'd be even better.

Anyone else with this problem?

I have downloaded the PDANet and it does work only real s l o w here in the sticks. It's a Sprint thing and they dont get it. Nextel coverage is great....they just dont have the phone...arghhh. Its fast at the office with cell signal, go figure.

B4 you download PDANet on to your pc or laptop, remove the HTC Sync program if you have installed it. Now your ready to download PDANet to your pc. You can down load the app here www.junefabrics.com/

Prior to down load of the PDANet app to your phone go to Settings> Applications> click the box titled Unknown sources.."allow install of non-market applications". download the app to your phone, After the download go back and remove this check .

Start up the app on your phone, now tether the phone to the PC, click connect on both..your surfin' via the Hero.

All the credit goes to Jeff. .....next project, better cell signal with the Hero via Sprint.

Anyone care to tell us how to root/flash our Hero phones to be able to use them as a modem to view the net on a pc or laptop? Help?

I do not think the Sprint Hero has been rooted yet, might be wrong but it took a week or so before the Mytouch was rooted so for the time being the root accessed apps won't work.

I just set up PDANet and it runs faster than my Roadrunner cable modem on my wireless network.... hmmmmm... I see money saving advantages here! Thanks for the tip!
