How does the flip compare to a regular camcorder?
I am mainly interested in the Flip because of the portability. I have a camcorder but rarely bother to carry it with me. Is there much trade of in functionality? Stability? How is the sound quality? I mainly shoot 5- 10 minute clips of friends and family.
I love the Mino but it is bare bones as you can get. You can zoom (though not very much) delete video on the fly, and record video....pretty much it.
No image stabilizer so images are shaky. The video quality is quite good for the size and price. My one complaint is the mic, its fine under 6 feet & indoors. Outside, a breeze will drown out anybody's voice.
It does come with editing software built in, plug in to any USB and you can start cutting, adding titles and credits or add music.
It's great to capture small clips when you're out and about but not to replace a fell fledged camcorder.

We own one, but rarely use it now. For us, it's now all about availability, that and doing more and more on the iPhone. We never really take serious video's anymore, even on trips. We just take short clips of things we see, friends, family, the unexpected, etc. So that's kinda what we carried the flip around for. But now that we can take short videos on the iPhone, we don't really carry the Flip around anymore.
We had gone from a regular small camcorder, to a micro camcorder, to a Canon TX1, to Flip HD Mino, now to just the iPhone.
But getting back to Flip, it's good for things like concerts, where u don't want to carry around even a small camcorder. Vid quality is not anywhere as great as a dedicated camcorder, but you can just put it in your back pocket when not using it. If I didn't have an iPhone, would probably use it for events.
