Here something interesting.

Since the new update that allows for external storage on the 360, I've been using an 8 GB SanDisk microSD card I had lying around to help ease the burden on my lowly 20 GB HDD. When I configured it, the software said it met the 360's recommended requirements and it was optimized for use with games and video, or something to that effect. The other day, I stuck in another 8 GB microSD card, this time a Kingston. This card was reported to not meet the 360 recommended requirements and it mentioned that there may be a performance hit when playing games or videos off of it.

Curious, I pulled both cards out and looked at them. The SanDisk was a Class 2 card. The Kingston was a Class 4.

I call shenanigans! Wonder how much SanDisk paid MS to partake in this chicanery?

Whoa, that's pretty crazy!

Is one card older than the other? Maybe the Xbox 360 is doing some sort of read / write validation on the flash memory (though I guess that wouldn't make sense).

The Kingston was newly bought this past Sunday. The SanDisk is at least a year old. I agree, there's not much sense in two pieces of the same flash media responding in reverse where speed is concerned.

that is very strange indeed!! I just bought some no-name 16 GB memory stick off ebay so I could carry around my Rock Band songs and my profile in a pinch, but now I'm wondering if it will comply!! At least it just says it will be degraded and not fail completely...

I haven't noticed much difference between the two; I wouldn't install games on anything other than the 360 HDD anyway. But video playback is not discernibly different between the two cards. Both take a bit longer to load than video off the HDD, but that's to be expected. I'd suspect that you'll be fine with profile info and Rock Band songs.

Question though: when I tried to copy my profile to one of the cards for backup, it told me it could only move it. Did you just move it to the memory stick permanent-like or did you manage to copy it somehow?

I'm pretty sure you can only "move" now and not copy like on the original Xbox. For now I still have my profile on my original xbox 360 memory stick, but now I have the option to move it to usb stick also..

By the by, a coworker made me aware of the issues Kingston recently had regarding questionable products finding their way to market with their name on them. I'm pretty sure this is not the case with my card (it's one of the made in Japan cards which points to a re-badged Toshiba card; the way I've heard it, Kingston doesn't actual make any of their own products), but I'm gonna triple check when I get home today.
