Discussion about
HD streaming quality
Is the streaming HD video quality on your home network great or merely acceptable? Is remote viewing of HD material distinguishable from the older Slingbox models?
I would have said something, but don't own one, wish i did, but sadly i don't.
lol Thanks anyway man. I really thought it was a simple question.......
(I'm like 1 out of 5 with people responding to my topics! lol)

That is a very good point, look at everything else that people run into problems with and storm the board looking for answers.
Forget the answer, I just wanna live vicariously through the people that own one right now! Its one of those devices I really want and can't justify in any way right now....
It's HD quality on LAN, and very decent quality on the internet depending on the speed of the connection.
The minimum speed required in my experience to get smooth quality video (non-choppy, not HD) on the internet is about 300kbps.
The Slingbox controls the bitrate dynamically depending on your bandwidth, making streaming easy (just clicking start/stop) without having to mess with any video settings.

Thanks. Thats about what I expected. The slings quality on LAN has always been great and these new boxes have bumped the bitrate cap way up. On my slingbox classic, I get great quality SD TV at about 900kbps over the internet. I've only tested it on the LAN a few times because its installed at my mom's house, but it seemed to stream between 2000 to 3000kbps and look pretty sweet. I've heard the new ones will really start pushing data if your network allows it....
it could be my router (d-link dir-655) but i actually get fairly consistent lag spikes on my sling pro hd. on average, i am at about 2700k but i can go all the way up to ~4000k and then spike down to ~1500k...quite annoying. but again, it could be my router which i am getting closer and closer to replace.
It shouldn't be the DIR-655. I have that one and the research I've done shows it has a backplane which can handle up to 250mbps with no problem....
that sucks. I just updated the firmware on mine and it wouldn't even talk to my cable modem and get an IP. It was the worst firmware "upgrade" ever! Its finally working now after hours and headaches...
I heard the slinglink units were pretty bulletproof so I don't understand... maybe you should go into the settings for the slingplayer and tell it to stream at a constant bitrate - somewhere between the average and the high and see where it evens out. Thats the only advice I can give you...
On another note, i think that slingmedia has been slowly ( by means of their firmware updates) been reducing the video quality of their older boxes ( like the sling av which ive had for over 2 years now) to push ppl to get the newer boxes, i might start a thread about this, sorry coolguy1957. I dont have an answer to your question but as soon as i get one for myself ;-)
I can now answer my own question and tell you the HD streaming quality (on a LAN) is AMAZING! I researched this product extensively and discovered it would let me control/stream the cable box in the bedroom while I am on the cable box downstairs. This way I can watch two NBA games (league pass) or basketball and football or sports and a tv show.... (projector is showing the slingbox over the plasma tv!!) If I put both on the same channel, there is a 4 second lag on the sling image, but the color and framerate are both outstanding. It streams anywhere from 5 to almost 10mbps!! Now those are HD numbers!!
I am getting very good quality over my LAN with gigabit ethernet -- havent really had to use wifi yet, or tried streaming over the internet --
love the product and highly recommend! Thing with streaming over internet not LAn or WAN is that the higher the upload you have from your ISP the better, and then download on the other end is nice too. thing about the slingbox which is very nice is that it detects these settings and sends the right quality for viewing best on that connection (if you have it set to automatic)
