Discussion about
Have/Wants
I came to the iPad page to see the want and have numbers. I expected the want to be nearly zero. But only slightly over 1500 people have it, and 9000 people still want it. Must be a lot of people outside the US using this site. Or everyone's poor.
So why don't you have your iPad yet?
(I don't really want one; I'm waiting for the Android tablets. But I do want to keep up any news about the iPad.)

I don't think you have to be poor to not get an iPad if you want it. Some people (myself included) don't have $500 (minimum) to throw around at a luxury item.
I would love to have one but it's also not exactly what I need. My netbook suits me a litter better because it allows me to produce a lot more content instead of just consuming it.

I find the whole "consuming" vs "production" debate to be a bit ridiculous. My wife has one she uses almost exclusively for work She has used it it to update her blog; write blog posts; search and call up relevant papers and other data during meetings (she's a medical researcher); read and annotate medical journal articles; review and comment on a dissertation for which she was a reviewer; read and reply to email; etc. I used it at a recent county commissioners meeting (about the only time I've had a chance to use it) to look up financial matters which were referred to during the meeting, and I would have tweeted and emailed on it except it's not mine and I don't have any twitter clients set up with my account information. She's not writing the Great American Novel and she's not writing grant applications or journal articles on it -- for that she uses her laptop -- but it's doing a lot of things to help her be more productive.
I understand it may not the best device if you're a writer, and if most of what you do is taking notes from interviews and writing articles or books. You'd certainly wouldn't want one in lieu of a computer, if you could only have one device. But the production-consumption dichotomy you're repeating here is much too simplistic.

I saw an article yesterday that 75% of Apple Stores are sold out of the iPad with only the wifi model in stock and there's about a five day wait list at the stores to purchase.

I'm in the UK, so I don't even have access to one outside of the grey market. When I do though, I'll be holding off buying it since I don't have £429 to drop on what is nothing more than a toy (albeit a very cool one) at the moment.
Second gen is when I'll consider getting one.
