Has anyone here noticed the new booklight feature?

I think this is undoubtedly the coolest new feature on the 3rd gen Kindle, and I haven't seen much discussion of it. Basically, the slots on the left side of the device that accept hooks to hold the covers in place are now capable of transmitting power. This means that accessories, like Amazon's new cover with the built in LED booklight (product page here: www.amazon.com/Kindle-Lighted-Leather-Display-Gene...), can be run off the Kindle's battery. Very cool.

I think that is very cool, but it's a bit pricey at $59.00. Also I would be concerned that it would take one of the prides of the Kindle and reduce it a bit adding the book lite could drain the battery faster. However even faster would still be amazing especially if the new kindle adds to it's already stellar battery life.

Of course you don't need to use the booklight under most conditions. It would certainly be a useful addition for certain uses.

I'm starting to think of changing my order to swap the case for one with the lights...an extra few dollars for a potentially useful feature...but I already feel bad for buying the Kindle 3 after having the Kindle 2 for only 5 months.

Cool idea, but I wonder how it will affect the Kindle's battery life. Plus, doesn't it make more sense to build this into the device?

Maybe it was the crappiness of the lighted cover for the PRS-505 for me, but while it would be cool for it to ship with a light, I have a feeling that most people might prefer to read this type of display with ambient light.

Cool feature though, I'm looking forward to using it.

I certainly do. Reading by a booklight is not pleasant for me. I have a little clip-on thing that works fine, but unless I'm in an unusual environment I'd rather just read with a lamp or light on.

I doubt the light will affect the battery life much. You'd still get a few solid days of use out of it at least even using the lights all the time.

I ordered a Kindle 3...
