Hackintosh

Hello,

I've heard so much news in the past of this notebook's predecessor, the Dell Mini 9, having perfect syncing with the Mac OSX operating system. In other words, there were no broken features that you would find in modifying another laptop in its class. (see: i.gizmodo.com/5156903/how-to-hackintosh-a-dell-min...)

I haven't been able to find any such reports for the Mini 10, however? Does it also have the same quality with modification?

Thanks in advance

I've been waiting for this one as well, I really love the build of this netbook and got to play with the standard 10 and it was really nice and responsive.

The mini 10 standard model is not compatible as a hackintosh because of the video adapter the 10v on the other hand is very similar to the specs on the 9. The best forum I have found is www.mydellmini.com/forum/mac-os-x/8694-mini-1011-m... where 'anguish' is working his way through the best procedure for hacking it. Its still less than perfect but usable.

and of course the best place for netbook hackintosh advice gadgets.boingboing.net/2008/12/17/osx-netbook-comp... a nice easy matrix to see what is compatible and what works and doesn't.

Hi,

I just posted this in the Win7 thread, but it probably should go here.

NOTE: This is about the Mini 10v (the Mini 10 is different)

Just wanted to let you know that I running Windows 7 RC and Mac OS X 10.5.6 (legally owned copy of the OS). I got the N270 CPU with 1 GB of RAM (upgrading to 2 GB tonight) and the 120 HDD. The installation of Windows 7 and Mac OS X 10.5.6 was extremely simple. I completed the installation of both while playing Gears of War 2: Dark Corners DLC. Also, I found a use for my XBOX 360 HD DVD drive as an external DVD drive to install both Win7 and OS X 10.5.6.

Here are the links to complete the installation (everyone should do it, as it's great to have portable computer with Win7 and OS X):
- Written walk through: www.63oh.com/Pages/Hackintosh/Hackbook/Walkthrough...
- Video walk through (3 parts): www.youtube.com/user/anguish79

Next, I'd like to add Jolicloud when my Alpha request comes through:

10 can't run OSX, but if you really want then get a mini 9. You can order them at the dell outlet, I am using a refurbished mini 10 and it is very reliable.

I heard you can put Mac OS X on the Dell Mini 10v. Not sure however.

OS X on Dell mini 10v is a go. This post was typed on one. I only have issues with the sleep function, but everything else works great. I followed Anguish's guide and posts.

I've got a mini 10v currently running OSX and LOVING IT!! i wish i would have taken the jump sooner but to be honest the mini 10v is the perfect platform for this. i under stand the mini 9 works great as well but i didn't want to be limited by the small size and the prices of the SSD used in them. I order a 10v from the dell outlet, visited the mydellmini forums and prep'd for about a week. following the youtube videos and the the detailed instructions on the site i was able to complete the project in a few hours. I've never tried a project like this before, but i am amazed at the result. people comment on the system everywhere i go. if interested i would HIGHLY recommend. The step are actually getting easier with the new fixes and bootloaders that assume most of the work.

I have a hard time believing that Leopard on an ATOM is usable...my 1.86 C2D Macbook seems sluggish to me, my 2.4ghzC2D imac is what I'd call baseline performance.

Although, maybe my years as a PC overclocker makes me expect blazing speed.

The Mini 10v (not the Mini 10...different video chip sets) is perfectly usable as an OSX machine. It's actually preferable, in my opinion, to the Mini 9 since it has a bigger keyboard and ships with a 120gb HDD (though it is configurable with SSDs). I am actually dual booting OSX and Windows 7 RC and I love it! I've even hooked it up to an external monitor a time or two, running OSX, and done some light SD video editing. The atom processor runs like a mid-road laptop processor from about 4 years ago. You'll definitely notice hits in performance, especially compared to today's snappy dualcores. But at $300 and 10 inches, what are you really expecting? As noted in another post, the only thing not working on a Mini 10v Hackintosh is the sleep function. Still problematic. Still, as an easy machine to throw in your bag, walk around the city with and not have to give a crap about? It's great! It's perfectly usable to most tasks, and it's fun as hell to Hackintosh!

If it gives you any further perspective...OSX pretty much sees it as an original model Macbook Air.

I also am very happily using my 10v as a "hackintosh." It was a fun project (I have made 3, now) and they are ideal little machines to throw in your bag. Ripping DVD's to watch later is a breeze (cheap external USB DVD drive) and they look great on the screen. With care, you can get Snow Leopard to run fine with both sleep and speaker output working perfectly. I actually think 10.5.8 is probably the ideal version, for now, though. True 6 hour battery life (6 cell battery), sleeps when you close the lid and wakes immediately when you raise it, including logging back on wifi and recognizing your bluetooth mouse. I have not used any other portable as effortlessly for day to day tasks. It will even run Quake Live if you want a dose of 3D gaming! Follow the gurus at mydellmini.com and don't hesitate to pick one up and make the switch.

It is also a guaranteed conversation starter at Starbucks / internet cafe of choice!

Hackintoshing the Mini 10v is ridiculously easy. Look for the guide Mydellmini.com, but the easiest way to do it is to remove the hard drive, mount it to a real Intel-based Mac, install Leopard or Snow leopard to it, run the Netbookmaker app, shut it down, reinstall the drive into the Mini 10v, boot it up. You might have run Netbookinstaller app a time or two, but it works like a charm. Check the forums/guides over at MyDellMini. The guide I'm talking about is under installing on a 10v with the A06 bios, but I think it should work with some of the previous bios versions.

Echoing the thumbs up for OSX on a Mini 10v. I have a dual boot Win7/OSX setup and have had no issues yet. As others have mentioned, www.mydellmini.com is a great site for help and info about the hackintosh procedure.

I celebrated the release of Windows 7 yesterday with creation of my MacBook Mini (SL on Mini 10v). Extremely easy, everything works out of the box. Brilliant. Runs great too, highly recommend it if you're in the market for a netbook/hackintosh

I have a mini9 hackintosh with a 64GB SSD. Runs beautifully. I'm tempted by the 10v's bigger keyboard. Does anyone know if I can simply transfer the SSD from my mini9 and slide it into the mini10v?

Can anyone speak to Hulu performance? Or streaming South Park episodes?

mmm...
Hulu not that good on OSX 10.6.1 with 1gb of Ram.
Pretty choppy
Boxee is also choppy
You tube works well
PBS website videos work well in full screen
Joost works well too

Maybe with an extra GB of Ram video performance could improve, can anyone confirm?

Divx AVI's and Quicktimes play very in full screen no matter what the encoding settings are, using Quicktime player (and Perian).

Everything else works really well, even with just a Gig of Ram

I got the dell mini 10v and hacked.

It wasn't that hard to do and it works fine.
