The biggest problem with these iPad keyboards and keyboard cases is that you're prone to having "gorilla arm." That is, if you need to do any sort of interaction with your iPad (besides typing -- say, changing apps, selecting text, selecting an option from an in-app modal), you actually have to reach out and physically touch the screen. It's a potentially tiring type of motion.
It's especially perplexing, since this is something that Steve Jobs has specifically mentioned as not ideal for touch screen laptops and desktops: "Touch surfaces don’t want to be vertical. It gives great demo, but after a short period of time you start to fatigue, and after an extended period of time, your arm wants to fall off.”
However, Apple makes their own keyboard for the iPad that holds it up in a vertical fashion.
Ideally, it'd be nice to have some sort of optional pointer / mouse support on the iPad during times like this. Interestingly enough, someone has created a demo using iPad and Magic Mouse through jailbroken means: gizmodo.com/5534513/heres-an-ipad-controlled-by-a-...

Great point. I really like your suggestion - wonder what they will come up with. Surely there has to be something in the near future.
