Movies and music, Google is finally filling in the gaps in the Android ecosystem. It would be nice if it made it to Google TV.

I thought I saw a headline saying 3.1 is heading to Google TV,as well as the marketplace. Which should then mean the ability use Movies/Music.

I'm not getting to high on any of this because I think we've seen google not come through after high expectations.

My thoughts exactly. If I recall correctly, Google TV was supposed to be on a bunch on TVs last year and that wasn't the case.

The alliance between google, handset manufactures and carriers is huge but why only 18 months?

Why not 18 months, Most contracts let you upgrade between 20-22 months. Two months without the latest and greatest software isn't that big of deal is it? Besides most people on gdgt or the tech world would upgrade in what 6-12 months max. My experience with Android and the common folk is that they don't give a rats about what version they are on. Most only care about how many apps they can store. Really I just see this as forcing the manufacturers to not abandon their phones after they ship them like(cough) Samsung.

The lack of the "average" consumer's awareness of the benefits of having the latest updates is why they don't care. This is a good step on Google's part to try to fix the fragmentation problem because it's better for all consumers.

Also, as much as I would like to, I don't upgrade my phone every 6-12 months. You can call me a frugal gadget lover.

I understand that but to only support a device for 18 months is really not that great. Especially when you consider they didn't state anything in regards to how quickly the updates must come out.

Honestly what device is fully supported after 18 months, The iphone is barely supported for 12, one major release and a handful of features at 24 months and then its forgotten. Phones generally aren't supported at all, Apple changed that but still no where near 18 months with features.

Hold on. The every iPhone has been supported on the latest iOS release for two years at least. The 3GS runs the latest iOS 4.3.3 and it was released almost two years ago. The iPhone 3G at least got iOS 4 (yes, minus multitasking) when it well over two years old. No two year Android phone has gotten anywhere near that long term support from Google.

You are right, but the 3GS got the 4.0 update(at 12 months) and I am willing to bet it will only get a few bits of the iphone 5 update, not the whole thing. I am not saying they don't update there two year old phones but its not the full thing and as a result it is excluded from certain apps, and features. My point is that the iphone gets 1.5 major updates before being dropped from the list(at least so far)
