Gartenberg hypothesizes that using AirPlay to play games on Apple TV should theoretically be possible.

This is an interesting consideration. I'm not entirely sure how practical this would be (as far as I know, AirPlay seems to just mirror the media play back and display of an iPad / iPhone / iPod touch to an Apple TV).

Are there any developers playing with the 4.2 SDK who would be willing to comment on the feasibility of this?

There's already a game out there that does this, Chopper 2. You connect the iPad to a tv with an AV cable which displays the game content on your tv, and you control the game with iPhones or iPod Touches over Bluetooth. I wouldn't be surprised to see the concept ported to an AppleTV fairly quickly once they open it up to app development.

It is certainly an interesting idea and something I would love to try. I wonder if Apple really sees their new Apple TV as the bridge between their other iOS devices and the living room. It is a Trojan Horse, strutting into your living room disguised as a Netflix box, secretly it will begin leveraging the iOS UX in the war to gain control in the living room ... either way. Mine is on the way from Shenzen via Hong Kong as we speak and I can't wait to give it a try :)

The problem with potential apps is that the AppleTV doesn't seem to have any internal memory to store them on, unless I'm missing something.

Yeah, I doubt there's much extra space left after accounting for iOS. We won't know for sure until iFixIt does a tear down!
