I would say wait for modern warefare 2, it looks like it would be excellent. I am going to be buying small games from the PSN stores in the meantime to keep me busy.

Resistance 2 is an excellent game and has a really strong online element in both co-op and death match modes.

The main online games I play for the PS3 are Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Wipeout HD, and Crash Commando.... those last two are games you buy at the Playstation store and are not expensive

Killzone 2 is a graphical marvel similar to Call of Duty

LittleBigPlanet is online multiplayer Super Mario Bros basically - lots of great user created levels too

Wipeout HD is an update to the old Playstation series which features super fast racing and great graphics

Crash Commando is a simple 2D shooter with red vs blue soldiers and jet packs!!

I second Crash Commando - old school platformer style gameplay with 3D graphics and online mayhem. Awesome game. Really filled the void that BC:R's onlineless yet awesome multiplayer left.

This next one doesn't fit your description, but I'm gonna mention it anyway. It's not multiplayer and it's not even PS3 exclusive. But I just played Prototype for the first time for a couple hours today, and OMFG. The first 5 minutes blew what little I've played of InFamous out of the water. It's so good so far.

Killzone 2 is a good game if you can get past the sluggish AA & v-sync enduced controls. It's not responsive and will take a while to get used to if you play CoD. The KZ2 campaign is totally worth it though, even if you go right back to CoD for multiplayer.

I was just going to mention Uncharted, but that is also non-multiplayer. I fail! Well, they are all good games at least.

If you don't purchase Uncharted, you will miss out on THE BEST game this gen. It's everything Tomb Raider should have been, but combined with some killer Gears of War style shooting. Buy buy buy.

Playstation home. It's not very fun at all. I recommend that.

and Uncharted 2 WILL have a very large multiplayer component (and stellar story again no doubt) and comes out Oct. 13th....

inFamous is awesome fun! But a game that keeps on giving, with massive play time, is Fallout 3 without a doubt. The best value for money game on PS3 or 360.

I popped in Killzone 2 for a halftime romp and now I just can't wait to get off of work and go play through it!!!
