FTW: Oldest (Working) Model M?
OK. This post is 75% curiosity, but 25% bragging rights. My working Model M (typing this post) was manufactured on "09NOV88" according to the sticker on the back. ID # 1516399. I am a little sad I missed it's twentieth birthday, but in just four months, my keyboard will be old enough to drink!
Can you beat me? I suspect you may... How old is your Model M (working or not?)

They sell functioning (and unopened) '87 models on clickykeyboards.com. That's the oldest I have heard of.
www.clickykeyboards.com/ has an extensive database of model M keyboards on their website.
model M fanatics can add their own keyboard details to the open Google spreadsheet

The earliest 1391401 keyboard looks like it was made by IBM on 3/17/87 (ID# 3007778)
and last 1391401 was made by Lexmark (3/14/96) (ID# 366493)
There are also earlier model M keyboards (also PC compatible).. earliest one is from '85 from an IBM industrial PC (part# 1388032)

21 August 1987. Works great, & it has a MORE BEER substitute keycap.
I trust you're not using her to type dirty things...
At least not for a few more years.

I have 4:
Three IBM
One Dell
Two of the IBM's are PC compatible, the third (first one I bought) I picked up @ a yard sale for $5 before I knew it wasn't PC compatible. It also doesn't have the replaceable key caps.
I'm always keeping my eyes out @ thrift stores/flea markets/garage sales for them.
The one I'm typing on now is an IBM - 08-17-1993

The guy on clickykeyboards.com has/had an industrial grey Model M made in late 1985.

He also had a ton of 1986 ones, mainly the earlier 1390131 model.

I have 2 Model "M"s — a 1391401 (Black Label) from 1989 in excellent condition, and I just got a brand new, never opened 1993 42H1292 (Blue Label). They truly are the greatest keyboards of all time. They should have a perfect 10/10. Anyone reviewing them otherwise probably shouldn't be writing reviews. Long live the Model M — they rock!
I turned over my Model M, which I have used everyday for years to discover that it is a relative youngster at 04-19-90 (Although it's 20th birthday is coming up.) However, I checked my other Model M, which is on a system I usually control remotely so it isn't used too much (and it is missing four key caps) to discover it is a 10Jul87.
I grabbed several out of a bank dumpster in 1990. One eventually developed a problem, but the other two work well.
