Discussion about
For the first time ever, Apple will live stream one of its media events. My work here... is done. (I hear team gdgt might even retire my keyboard.
)

P.S. -Call me skeptical, but after covering these things for as many years as I have, I'll be pretty impressed if they don't see a bit of downtime.
P.P.S. -Yes, I'll still be covering the event tomorrow (at live.gdgt.com/). You know, just in case they really do stream to ONLY Apple devices as that press release states.

Absolutely not! Your commentary is needed more than ever - How else will I cut through Apple's notorious "reality distortion field"? I fully intent to have the video on, with the sound muted, and your written words up in split screen ( and I imagine a bazillion others will too ).
This isn't the first time ever.
Back when streaming quicktime was new, they live streamed Macworld keynotes. You mostly got to watch distortion because the technology was new and the servers couldn't handle the load.
Or are you saying that keynotes don't count as "media events?"

I'm not sure if that really counts -- Macworld was never "their" event. That was back in the days when IDG had more pull over Apple, and probably just went ahead and decided they wanted to stream the keynote. (I'm not saying Apple had no say, but again, IDG owned and controlled Macworld and the Macworld keynote -- which is why Apple isn't doing Macworld anymore.)
I see this as being a little bit different. I don't think Apple has ever live streamed an Apple-produced event before. Should be interesting!

I really doubt it was primarily an IDG move. Apple provided the technology and hosted the streaming after all. It seems more likely that Apple wanted to show off a new technology and get more people watching the 'note.
Then again, I seem to remember Tech TV coverage with commentators one year. I doubt Apple suggested that, so maybe you are right.

I'm guessing its because of the iphone 4's demo and the lack of connectivity. My guess is they don't want or are going to eliminate any wireless devices other then there own. Which could end up being a bad thing, or a good thing, depends on how good there live stream is.
Eh, that was different. At WWDC, the keynote was in a hall that held 5,000 people, nearly all carrying mobile phones, plus a healthy contingent of hundreds and hundreds of bloggers with hotspots.
This event is being held across the street at YBCA, which only holds around 450 or so. They've never had these problems at YBCA before, so not sure. I think they're just trying to demo this streaming tech on Apple only devices at the moment so they can ramp up to everything for bigger events in the winter and at WWDC.

But I wouldn't put it passed them to implement this in the future, Apple and Steve Jobs has a way of controlling every bit and WWDC im sure stuck in their craw a bit since the demo did not go as planned. They might not block devices yet but they might at WWDC next year.
You are probably right, but they might try it, albiet unsuccessfully. I would much rather watch keynotes via GDGT then by the hosts to much fluffing that could happen.
And with that I a feel retarded, I see they are streaming it to ios devices, wow well nvm, maybe there is still hope
Hah, I guess Ryan and I still have jobs after all! Someone on Twitter said, "Some think Apple's video stream is going to kill live blogs. Nope. Office workers prefer words because videos give away they aren't working."

I'm surprised, though the more I think about it wireless contention at the iPhone 4 event may have finally pushed it over the top.
You'd know The Steve Mind way better than I would, but isn't it true that The Steve likes things to go as planned?
