After two days of use I'd like to just write a quick note of my first impressions, they all go along the lines of "I love it"
The device is smaller in length than the iPhone but a little thicker. Its a bit plastic-y and reminds me of my Creative Zen V Plus. It feels more solid with the battery in place.
Set up for me was seamless. There is a quick start guide included which provides a website to visit to enter carrier details and set up security etc. My SIM was already to go so once I had inserted the SIM and battery I was ready to go. I haven't set up security yet because I would like to give access to my friends during this first period of ownership and also because I can easily turn the MiFi off when I'm not using it.
There is only one button which is also an LED which displays different colours which indicate what type of mobile connection you are using at the time as well as the charging light and when the device is fully charged.
Its very nifty in the simplicity of its design.
So far I've only used the device in my home but during the working week I will be testing it out in multiple locations to get idea of it's mobility use.
I've streamed video smoothly and its performance so far seems comparable to my 1500kbps ADSL connection. I am using a HSPA 3G mobile signal.
It's neat that the device comes with a range of international power plugs, in my case I am in Australia and the appropriate plug was included.
I'm keen to try out the device as a NAS storage device but I will need to buy a Micro SDHC to use in the device before I am able to say how well that works.
There are couple of improvements which could be made to the device, the first is battery life which is rated at 4 hours but it would be preferable to have all day performance given this is a mobility device. The second feature has been noted by JKK Mobile which is that when the included USB cable is plugged into the computer it forces the MiFi to become a wired modem and turn off its WiFi trasmission to other devices. JKK got around this by slicing open the USB cable and cutting the data wires while retaining the power. This is a tricky solution I wouldn't feel confident performing. The ideal solution would be for the MiFi to offer a 'recharge only' option perhaps in a pop up when you plug it via USB into a computer.
Pros:
Small
Versatile
5 devices can be connected a once
Easy to set up
Easy to use
Video streaming is smooth
NAS storage
An array of international power adapters are supplied
Cons:
I desire battery life for at least 8 hours
I desire charging via USB without the device switching to a wired modem
A little toylike
