Firmware 3.0 Impressions....
Download is 43% as I speak.... itching with anticipation eventhough I haven't particularly cared about the improvements I've read about....
new opening sounds the same, but flashes the new redesigned curvy PS3 logo and fades to black with glittery sparkles... sounds a little hokey but looks cool enough..
the home screen is "Whats New" and flashes news, recently played games, PSN store announcements. hitting X magnifies all this and lets you select between them with large icons.
The Playstation Store icon under Games shows te default store access button as well as new games and new demos available - I really like how when you select it the icons blow up and fill out the screen

Doh, I'm not at my house tonight and want to check this out. Gotta wait until tomorrow.

Hi everyone, PlayStation 3 (PS3) firmware update (v3.00) adds a number of great new features that we’re excited to share with you. The latest update incorporates changes that improve navigation on your PS3. First, you’ll notice some cosmetic changes to the design of the XMB (Xross Media Bar). We’ve enhanced the look and feel of the XMB so that it’s easier and even more intuitive to use. We’ve also added network improvements and personalization options to help enhance your PS3 experience.
Additional highlights from update 3.00 include:
“What’s New” – The “Information Board” will be replaced with a “What’s New” section, which allows you to enjoy interactive PlayStation news every time you start the PS3 system. Located under the PlayStation Network icon,
“What’s New” displays the latest and greatest game, video, PlayStation Network and PlayStation news and releases, as well as your recently played games, in a sleek, new animated format.
Status Indicator – In the top right corner we’ve added an indicator bar, which displays your user icon, friend icon, the number of friends you have online and a small message icon to let you know if you have any new messages. The indicator also includes a scrolling ticker that features the latest news from PlayStation Network. In addition, when you press the PS button, the battery life indicator will no longer cover up the clock.
Friends List – Now your PlayStation Network friends will appear in a slightly redesigned format on your Friends List. Also, messages will now be viewable from each of your friends’ respective profiles.
PlayStation Store Shortcuts – We’ve added a handy shortcut icon to the PlayStation Store under both the Game and Video categories so you can access the latest content quickly and easily.
Personalization – Personalize your PS3 with new dynamic custom themes and avatars. Dynamic themes as well as free and premium avatars will be available through PlayStation Store. A dynamic theme takes your screen to a whole new level as it incorporates animated objects into the background.
Trophies – Showcasing your hard earned trophies just got better. Update 3.00 gives game developers the ability to modify how they display trophies for add-on content. Base and add-on game trophies will continue to be combined into a single list so you can see where you stand in a game as a whole. Within that list, trophies will be broken out into subcategories—base trophies and add-on trophies—that way, you can easily view the percentage of your base game trophy collection, and separately track your trophy progress in add-on packs. Look for this enhancement to be included in upcoming games.

The Playstation Store icon under Videos shows the default store access button and the new movies and tv shows available - these too blow up when you select them
When I select "I Love You, Man", it starts playing the trailer fullscreened and all of they PS3 bluetooth remotes buttons function on the trailer - I can pause, rewind, frame by frame, whatever... this is definitely an HD trailer as, it not only looks great, its streaming at about 10Mbps when I pull up the video details... about 256Kbps 2-channel AAC audio as well

In the music and video navigation a little scroll indicator shows up on the left to show how far you are in scrolling through your media lists. Not as helpful as a real scroll bar or some method to quickly skip down the list, but still an improvement.
I've had it for 40 minutes and the scrolling ticker in the status indicator is driving me nuts. The PS3 xmb, while not exactly elegant, was far classier looking previously without this ugly ticker. Anybody figure out a way to turn it off? I've perused the obvious places but haven't found any way to remove it, there might not be a way...

doesn't appear you can turn it off, I find it mild and no more annoying then the old way though. There's lots more info there now at least... and ya, it doesn't block the battery indicator anymore...
One new function that I checked has me really excited, although I doubt it will affect many of you. I have a very strange setup with my PS3 - I run the component video to a amplifier/splitter so I can output it simultaneously to a LCD TV and a DLP projector. I was having a problem with the audio before because it would only allow me to output audio from the A/V multi-out OR the fiber optic port... not both at the same time.
Well, now, under the Audio options, there just so happens to be a new option called "Audio Multi-Output"!!!
This option "Sets the output audio through multiple connectors simultaneously." I set it up and, yep, now there is sound on both. No more setting the sound for the TV and then switching it for the projector!! sweet...
The default background still as the flowing ribbon look but there are now sparkles around the ribbon popping in and out...
I also noticed that when you're browsing files, the background files will disappear to more accentuate what you are looking at. Its strange at first, but does kind of help in the end. It seems to do this on all files and even the system menus. In the videos list, the thumbnails still all play, but the titles disappear except for the file you're looking at.
At the end of the video trailer, it prompts you to "Proceed to the Playstation Store" or "Quit Playback" which returns you to the menu.

AWESOME!...now I don't have to switch up the audio settings everytime I want surround sound- I have it set up via HDMI (TV Speakers) and fiber optic (surround).
Dude, tell me about it!! That is definitely my favorite feature so far...
i think its good but i don't think it deserve the 3.0 moniker. its not a huge update like the xbox360. grr.
Such a weak update...
The least they could do is provide a free dynamic theme.
The ticker is pretty annoying.
I wish you could sort downloaded games in alphabetical order. Sorting by creation date is useless.
Only if the PS3 supported MKV files, then this would be the ultimate media center!

Depending on the audio/video codec used, the PS3 will play most .mkv's with a simple extension change to .avi... its worth a shot...
or .mp4, or you can set up mediatomb. I have mine streaming mkv's just fine.

I don't understand the scroll bar that appears when you scroll through a really long list! It doesn't seem to have changed anything, it just gives you a visual representation of how long you have to go to the end.... Has anyone figured anything out about this, or if theres some other search function I'm missing?
I'm pretty sure it just gives a visual representation of how far you've scrolled through the list.
For someone like me that has 60 GB of music on their ps3, as well as 100 GB of videos (vive le Tour de France!) It's very useful. I'd still prefer some way to use an actual scroll bar so I could skip straight to the middle of my list, but seeing how far I've scrolled is still a big improvement.
Having a bunch of music on your PS3 is useful for when you want to use your PS3 as a music server but concurrently fold@home.

I have a ton of videos on there too and its cool, but ya I wish I could straight to the middle or the end too.
I asked you about the folding@home in another thread but you missed it. I was asking you what activities can you do while folding@home is running? I thought you could only do folding@home while in the Life with Playstation application... If you can do it during other stuff, I just might do that. I play music on the PS3 sometimes as well...

It was on the second page of the "Join Us!" topic on the Gadget Discussions front page...
Can you disable the ticker and other info in the new box at the top like you could the old ticker? And are the fonts really as intrusively enlarged as I've heard. Breaking a nice interface makes me more than hesitant about upgrading seeing as there really aren't any new features added.
I must say, if the fonts are bigger/changed, I couldn't tell... I actually took the time going through all 3 available fonts last night and I really couldn't tell a difference between any of them.....
I'm waiting for non-premium new themes to come out so I can use them for their fonts.
The wallpapers for most of the free themes I toss and use the themes just for their fonts. I replace the wallpaper with my own images as I'm a prolific (though sadly neither gifted or skilled) photographer.

lol :P I changed to the default theme just to see what it was, but I will probably go back to one of the cool (& free) Wipeout HD themes... I find lots of the free ones to suck, but I do like the changed fonts and XMB icons...
The only premium dynamic theme I saw demoed was the LittleBigPlanet one and I really liked it, but I don't know their prices.. I think I might pay a few bucks for that, although if the text isn't clear, legible (a big problem with lots of the themes) it would be a complete waste....
I haven't noticed anything yet dude. I will post if I do later on tonight.
haven't noticed a sound change yet, but like I've said before I never really noticed it to begin with. Last night I was playing Ratchet & Clank on the projector with the surround sound super loud and my gf was watching Family Guy pretty loud on the TV... This was all in a normal sized (not master) bedroom.. so ya, I just got my hearing back!!
Well, once I here about the text on that guy, I might just snatch it up. Was just playing some more LittleBigPlanet the other night, a little by myself and a little with my girlfriend. Great stuff! Definitely one of the standouts for the PS3! The dynamic theme just looked so happy and cool, much better than I've ever seen the 360 dash look too. I'm kind of sick of its big clunky menus and it not playing nice with big media collections...
I like the new look of the OS. It gave my 60 GB model some new life. Even though it's a lot of the same stuff. That's ok; I like the PS3 as a whole.
To be fair, the look didn't change that much at all... I don't see any reason why it would now look "less high-end"...

I know its dumb, but I almost want it to be more dynamic! I want it to be like a movie or game going on in the background, but thats just my A.D.D. talking...

Has anyone in the UK found any dynamic wallpapers yet (without creating a Japanese or US account) and if so could you please point me to where they are hiding, whether it be on PS Store or otherwise.
All help is gratefully received.

I like it. I don't have to really pay attention to when I log in if I have any messages or migrate to the Friends selection to check. Also, that little billboard isn't as annoying at the other information board. Pretty much lets me know if anyone is online.
Dynamic backgrounds are nice...although I wouldn't pay for them...unless they're REALLY cool!

ya, I'm hoping some great dynamic backgrounds are on the way!! I really want to "Pimp My PS3!!"
