Finally, the iPhone 5 is here! What do you think?
For the past year we've waited with baited breath to see the new iPhone, and now it's here. The iPhone 5 runs iOS 6, is 7.6mm thick, uses LTE, and has a 1136×640, 4-inch display. Apps will be optimized for the wider screen, and you can watch widescreen video with 44% more color saturation (those are some vivid colors!). There's even a sapphire crystal lens cover!

I am going to say this (although it is still early in the presentation, I reserve the right to edit this)
I feel its an evolutionary step rather than revolutionary. The 4 inch screen was something we all kind of expected, as well as LTE
EDIT 1: New camera system? Meaning they are done with the Sony Exmor R?
EDIT 2: The new sound features are pretty cool. 3 Microphones and Noise cancelling. Also the new dock connector was expected

Me neither. Apple has fallen behind. In a few years we will look back and say that Apple lost its Mojo at the iPhone 4S launch. Their "give just enough" attitude used to work when they didn't have competition. Well, now they have competition.....and they are falling back quickly. I'm sure sales will go through the roof, but within a month people will realize their new, shiny iPhone5 looks old and dated.
I agree with the part about them "giving just enough" but I honestly doubt the 5 will look dated after a month or even a year. I still have the 4 and although similar to the 4s and close to the 5, I think the 4 looks great. I get asked all the time why I don't have a case on my phone and my answer is partly, "I don't drop my phone" and the other part is me explaining how much nicer and better it looks and feels without one.
and THAT adam is why people buy iphones. not for specs or performance or fun or utility. but simply because its considered "cool and in" and you want people to know your "cool and in" (this is not a cut thats not a BAD thing)
but some of us want our hardware to WORK. my S2 is sexy as all crap with a larger screen faster performance better camera (probably equal to iphone 5 now they FINALLY upgrade the soso camera it had) more memory standardized parts and not "glued together" or designed to be disposable.
OH and it runs android so I don't have to deal with apples crap with their itunes lock in and IOS is lets be honest rather boring though that is just my personal preference I like a clean and usable main screen that is elegant. not an ugly panel of icons.
the core problem with apple is they want it APPLE's WAY and they take aggressive active steps to PREVENT you the end user from having any say in that.
while android encourages you to "GO AT IT" make it YOURS.
I have seen plenty of apple users drool over my S2 (I don't even have an S3 yet waiting for the note II I want the even larger screen badly)
but they won't give up their "meme" of its cool to have an iphone.
to hell with cool FIRST thing I did was slap a 3 layer hard/soft case on my phone. Blue and Orange of course (two favorite colors)
save my butt a few times. Got a little frisky with a wasp next I was trying to photograph. They taught me the error of my ways and sent out a little squadron of 5 or 6 to my hand to educate me :-) my phone ended up soaring through the air landing 15ft away in the road. if not for that case....
I don't drop my phone either. but sometimes I throw it :-) hehe

And quite frankly I have all same or similar apps I need. I am using the Lumia 900 for work and person. And just traveled to London for a 10 days business trip, 1st time without my macbook pro. Super happy with the performance. Many phones has surpass the Iphone, there is no reason to pay premium prices for lesser specs.
That said, definitely will upgrade to Nokia Lumia 920.

What are the best new apps? There are only so many apps anyone needs and they are the same usual 10? 20?
And the fact that for similar specs phone, why pay so much more for an Iphone?
It's not that I do not like IOS. I for one switched from Iphone 4 to a Nokia Lumia 900. Tire of all the small increment from each new Iphone.

Android runs on 68% of the world's smartphones in use... pretty sure developers might want their apps on more than just iOS
I honestly thing even my S2 (screen doubler installed) is superior to this iphone 5. 16 gig? check 4" skinny screen? heck no 4.5 wider screen. 8mp? check the S2 has one of if not THE best cell phone camera commonly on the market.
9.6mm thick only 2 mm more than the iphone. woopee.
SD slot - iphone ? nope. Third party support - iphone? nope
Standard sockets iphone? nope.
not only is it not a huge improvement over the iphone 4 but its "lackluster" even when compared to LAST YEARS higher end android phones.
I was really hoping for more from apple. very disappointed.

Expectations were very high because this is a company that made a name for itself by releasing superb products, way ahead of the competition. Now, they are followers.
Also, Apple talks "revolutionary" , "best ever", "most advanced" products, so we are expecting that. Only they fell short on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 5.

yeah, it doesn't help that it gets so much attention from reviewing websites too -.- including gdgt. all apple products get good scored here, and other good devices don't even get reviews! i'm not an apple hater, i'm writing this on my iMac, but really? hp's envy, one of my favorite laptops, and definitely one of the best doesn't even have a review!?
Seems to be the same Sony sensor (8 Mpx backlit), but new and improved lens.
Pretty boring. It's great to see features like LTE and a larger screen added but features like those have been available widely on other phones for years now. The announcement feels similar to the 3G announcement in that Apple's playing catch-up for the most part on features already implemented for a long time elsewhere.
Some of it is catch up (LTE, larger display that not everyone cared about) but that just means now iPhone owners get the best of both worlds: 1st tier apps, updates on day 1 even when 2-3 years old, Apple Store support structure (no dealing with clueless carrier stores or places like Best Buy), AirPlay, industry leading resale value, AND the hardware that matches top tier Android phones (with exception to those that want a 2 hands-required phablet).
Android has yet to "catch up" to the iPhone in a lot of areas, so if the iPhone "catches up" to Android in the rest then that's quite good for Apple.
That said this is an evolutionary upgrade and that's totally ok with me. I didn't see any revolutionary upgrades in the GSIII either. Quite a few software gimmicks though like PIP.

please enlighten me. except for "cult following" (not in a negative way) please name "ONE SINGLE" way that android needs to catch up to iphone 5. in fact the iphone 5 is "subpar" in almost every single category.
Smaller screen
lower resolution screen
"ok" camera (should be up to par now)
lower performance
fewer expansion options (zero)
no changeable battery
proprietary connection
oh wait. you think the 2mm thinner than my 2 year old S2 (9.6mm versus 7.6mm) is some huge thing androids phones need to catch up to? (btw the SIII is 8.6mm 1mm larger)
seriously. WHAT exactly does the iphone have that droids have not already had for over a year now? I can't think of one single thing honestly.
you call it a phablet? I call the iphone where is my magnifying glass. too darned small a screen and I have good eyes. while I can see 3.5 inch screens just fine (that is what the iphone 5 has a stretched 3.5 inch screen) but its NOT fun NOT comfortable and NOT pretty. I have BIG hands :-) I want EYE candy and the iphone just lacks in eye candy.
The GSIII does not need revolutionary upgrades its at the TOP. its the best that is out their.
not sure what you mean by software gimmicks the first thing I do with my phones is erase them fully and install custom unbloated sleek clean operating systems on them. oh wait. you can't do that with apple either.
I can't think of one thing in the iphone that is not equal to or INFERIOR to that of an equivalent android phone. it does not "beat" the SIII in a single category or aspect unless your going to try and stick with the 1mm thinner thing?

except the 5 does NOT have a more powerful engine and does NOT have a revised sleeker exterior or an upgraded interior OR increased performance.
it has NONE Of those things. OH wait. you were comparing to the iphone 4. so ok you have a point if the iphone 4 and iphone 5 where the only phones on earth.
compared to "NON" iphones the iphone 5 is "old tech" not even fully matching "last years" tech.

hate? your selection of terminology. showing no interest or desire for something new that is not even as good as what I have already had for well over a year? yes. that about sums it up.
the 5 is not even EQUAL to last years higher end droids not even close to "today's" droids.
the ONLY thing apple has going for them is the cult like following people have for them. plus if your stuck with something as lame as an iphone 4 (compared to droids) then sure the iphone 5 appears to be this nice huge upgrade.
but for those of us who have already had superior hardware for some time now its simple a "meh" whatever.

I never thought I'd see the day where I would be more excited for a Nokia phone (Lumia 920) than a new iPhone. Had Apple actually fitted the iPhone 5 with a larger screen instead of a wider screen, I would be on board. This screen redesign feels "reluctant" coming from Apple.
The screen is actually what I was hoping for. I might feel different when I get my hands on it but these other phones that look like your holding a tablet to your face is just silly to me. I don't know which phone my buddy has but when he answers it, it's like his whole face is hiding behind something.
I really am confused by comments like this
The SII is 5.38" x 2.78"
The Iphone 5 is 4.87" x 2.31"
you DO realize the difference between these phones is .51" x .47"
you do realize this is around 12mm each direction. for all intents and purpose that mean anything and have any relevance in reality these phones are the same size.
so if you think an SIII (arguably one of the largest on the market next to the NOTE) is like holding a "tablet to your face"
then SO IS holding an IPHONE to your face. they are darned near the SAME STINKING SIZE (ok the iphone is also exactly 1mm thinner)
your joking right?

If you don't care at all what ecosystem your in, yes. I find it takes forever to keep up with 2 ecosystems and right now I'm still well over on the Mac iOS side of this. I do like 2 devices if that suits you. And I would like Nokia to have a chance to excel as they did in the past. Meanwhile, I will be more than happy with an iPhone 5. I'm not much for slap dash innovation. I like the planned out and thought through approach people like Jony Ive use.

Same as every year, it takes over the (subsidized) prices of its predecessor, and the older "shift down" in price: iPhone 4 is now the new "free phone" instead of the 3GS.
