Discussion about
Final predictions?
Ok, in just about 52 hours or so Steve Jobs will unveil the iSlate (or whatever it ends up being called), would love to see everyone's final predictions!
So this isn't so much a prediction, but I was at my local Verizon Wireless store (not an authorized reseller) just looking around, and the manager came up and asked me if I needed any help, and I tol him I'm not getting anything until I hear about the apple tablet later this week. He then told me flat out they will be carrying it. So take that with a grain of salt, but it kind of jives with the BGR article I saw later this evening after I came home.
From the school of "you don't win anything by being right, so you might as well be wildly wrong":
--Microsoft Surface-like capabilities: you can put objects up to or onto the screen and it can interact with them.
--Copier/OCR capabilities, either through a camera under the screen (although if they wanted it to be a document scanner, the screen would have to be larger than the rumored 10.5 inches) or just a regular camera.
--The ability to share the screen/perhaps certain content files instantly with another iSlate user via IR/Bluetooth/maybe WiFi. Even better, the ability to collaboratively work on documents.
--The ability to run two apps simulateously via split-screen capability, allowing you to transfer files or data from one app to another.
...in reality, it'll probably just do the stuff most people have mentioned (control media sources, be an e-reader, etc), but why not have some fun with the possibilities.

all those things still wouldn't make it a must-have but would be totally cool! sliding the screen on to other devices would be sweet too. they should partner with hardware manufacturers like Netflix is doing to make their TVs/Blu-ray/DVD players work with it.

I don't think it's plausible, but it would be very cool if they'd developed some kind of eye-tracking camera. Apparantly they filed for a patent for this back in 2007, according to recombu.com/news/is-apple-about-to-open-a-can-of-e...
am I the only one that thinks they may not be announcing any tablet at all that's week?
Personally, iPhone OS on this thing is a big FAIL! STILL wont be able to multitask! I'm reading people all syced to get it, replacing their macbooks... hahaha! They will sorely be disappointed! I mean, to be honest it would be a great device for reading magazines and books, and player games, and web surfing, but lack of multitasking will suck! I'd go ahead and get a windows 7 netbook for all of that, and damn is windows 7 THE SHYT!
I'm used to things on my Pre w/ the sick, uncomparable multitasking. I won't use another device w/o it, PERIOD! The lack of multitasking + the high price (~$1000)? NO THANKS APPLE..... I'll wait for a webOS tablet, will be sooooooo much better! and if you're hating on webOS and haven't even use it.... i have nothing to say to fanboys.

I Think the OS will probably be a cut down version of os x, like windows has starter edition for mobile devices (e.g archos 9). either that or a new, light OS that goes witht the theme of all apple products at the moment with cover flow and all. I don't think it would go down too well with iphone os, that would just be lazy :P
Won't it be weird if it's just a revised version of their idea of a Macbook having a dock ability to become something similar to an iMac... but instead of a Macbook, it'll actually be touchscreen/tablet? Kind of like a hybrid "tablet and that all-in-one HP touchscreen computer"? Well just guessing.
hahaha, where's the fun in that! In the end that there's really nothing, I can start saying that we've been rick-roll'd, no wait, we've been Appled!
Two versions: One with a mobile data plan (not sure which carrier) and one wifi only.
Front facing camera for iChat video (and Skype) video chatting.
No E-ink screen, 9-10 inch capacitive touch screen.
Book reader software that makes the Kindle look dated and content deals with a few publishers of magazines and newspapers which is integrated with iTunes. (iTunes may get renamed to reflect its increasingly non-music focus)
TabletOS forked from OS X and looks nothing like iPhoneOS or OS X.
Only one physical button.
Garageband and iPhoto to be heavily integrated, there will be a demo of the tablet used as musical instrument.

Heavily customised version of OS X with significant restriction on levels of access, similar to what was done with iTunes on Apple TV.
UI based around an evolution of multi-touch gestures found on current line Macbook / Macbook Pro on entire touch screen:
- 1 finger = click
- 2 finger swipe = vertical and horizontal scroll
- 3 finger horizontal swipe = back/forward in browser other (context dependent) functions
- 3 finger vertical swipe= ?
- 4 finger horizontal swipe = reveal all running apps in live "card" view -> 1 finger click to select/switch to running app
- 4 finger vertical swipe = hide/reveal "desktop" / "home" screen
Voice /control and transcription will play a major role in terms of both input and navigation.

The killer app will be gaming, second, ereader.
It will also be positioned as a kitchen, couch, remote (the perfect household device) wireless device. It's the bigger iTouch running new and improved iPhone apps.
It'll be the death knell for traditional print pubs, such as magazine, newspapers and other dinosaur media.
Mobile advertising and search will take on a whole new perspective. Will it support Flash? Can Google be far behind? Will this successfully compete with Google Chrome OS?
Net net: it's not about the hardware.

Speaking of a base station...
I think we'll see something that's a combination of AppleTV and a timecapsule. Big wireless hard drive for centralized media. It would be used for sharing music, photos, games, live and recorded television, e-books and movies throughout your house or streamed on the go.
Kind of like a Tivo/Roku/Slingbox/xbox360 mashup.
- Basestation = $500 (or $100 when subsidized by a 2 year contract to Verizon Fios)
- Tablets = $400-600 each. (Steve want's you to buy one for every family member)

I like (but doubt) the idea of this being something that could almost replace the Apple TV. I don't think that will be the case though because it would basically require them to use HDMI which they have shunned in the past. Maybe they'll supply a dock-connector>HDMI cable or something.
Of course I think they'll have to have a gaming component to it, it'll need a revamped OS with multitasking capabilities.
Either way, we don't even know if it exists (being almost positive doesn't count) and I think it would be really funny if they didn't release a tablet. So many people would be angry.

Lol... There's no telling sometimes with Apple. But it would be a huge disappointment if there is no tablet announcement on Wednesday.
10.1 Capacitive Screen (No OLED due to costs at this time)
Wifi B/G/N
3G Optional?
Processor will be custom dual core running at around 2.0 - Custom via PA Semi
64GB Flash
IPhone OS 4.0 - (Background processes, Multitasking and Modified UI)
Optional Dock for Connecting to TV and Keyboard and Mouse - Makes it the perfect HTPC
Connectivity with IPhone - IPhone to used as gaming pad possibly
(Partnering with NYT and other media outlets for books and magazines)
The best thing about all this conjecture is there is the one thing no one is gonna see coming till Steve announces it - Cant wait!
Price 800 - 1000

I kind of hope they don't release a tablet, just because all the bloggers will go crazy. I think that whatever they release will be brand new and it will almost certainly be hardware. I say this because of the invite: "Come see our latest creation." If it was an Apple TV revamp or whatnot, I don't think they'd call it a creation.
I am hoping it will be affordable. If they have a large inventory, the price will be competitive. Also, holding back, I mean a major feature missing, and making us wait until the next generation. I am so ready to buy a Netbook or this product.
I see this as being a replacement to the Apple TV. It's an all in one media center which docks to send video to your TV.
Now, what would be even cooler is if the iSlate had a dock that doubles as a wireless receiver that will connect the iSlate to the dock and send video that way. So you never have to dock it and it can be next to you as you watch TV on your couch.

That it won't (but most likely will) cost an arm and a leg?
ahh how we can dream...
